Iraqi Transfer of Power
    #2835969 - 06/28/04 11:38 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

What exactly does this mean? The Coalition will still be in charge despite this "early" handover. Our troops will continue to die as they police Iraq and our money will continue to flow to rebuild firehouses and such (though there is apparently no spare money for needy US firehouses). What was handed-over?

How symbolism equals progress is beyond this poster's ability to comprehend. As nothing ACTUALLY happened, this amazing (non) event could have "happened" anytime. For some strange reason, I tend to think of news as about an event that transpired. The handshaking and smiling and swearing-in annoucements are all for show.

See, now when things continue to go wrong over in Iraq, we can blame the Iraqis now (!)

It's a step, one of many already made as well as yet to be taken.

Swami writes:

Incorrect. The CPA is no more. Bremer has left the country. The highest-ranking US official left in Iraq is now the US ambassador.

Our troops will continue to die as they police Iraq and our money will continue to flow to rebuild firehouses and such (though there is apparently no spare money for needy US firehouses).

There are still US troops in the Balkans, eleven years after the US bombing. There are still US troops in South Korea. Hell, there are still US troops in Germany! What's your point?

How symbolism equals progress is beyond this poster's ability to comprehend.

It is quite a bit more than symbolism, as you are well aware. The interim Iraq government is in charge of governing Iraq now, not the CPA.

Bush has left the country. Guess he is no longer in charge.

Did not realize troops continue to die in Germany in firefights and bombings. Guess I better check the news.

The interim government is "in charge" as long as it goes along with US policy.

It is quite a bit more than symbolism, as you are well aware.
I am about as aware of that as the non-celebratory Iraqi populace, but give me your address and I will send you a bottle of Andre Champagne to uncork.

hahaha... no shit. some people just don't get it. it's all a facade, a joke, a lie, and the masses for the most part just go along with it, not questioning, not wondering what really is happening. the biggest give-away is the legal(not physical) tranfer of custody of saddam to the new government. hahaha... america has been duped... again.

Just as I figured. I volunteered to serve our nation in the Viet Nam era and was honorably discharged where as you, well...

I served in the first Gulf war from Oct '90 until May '91, so i'm a bit biased but the way you post you would think that us failing would put a smile on your face.

You would be thinking wrong.

I believe in serving my country, not the power elite. Bankrupting our nation and getting our young people killed under false pretenses does not get me in a flag-waving mood. Viet Nam served no good purpose for our nation. The current action seems to be quite similar to this vetreran and ardent student of history.

I agree. But the wheels are already in motion.

I don't buy the Vietnam comparison, not even close, even for a ardent history student. I find it funny how the entire world hates the US when we intervene into a dictators country but the minute we decide not to help the whole world hates us for NOT getting involved.

I'm almost to the point of saying fuck em, let them all die by their own hand.

It all depends on what comparisons are being made. I believe that neither action will/did make our country safer. I believe both (not a conspiracy theory) are being manipulated to make money for a few. Of course there are many differences as well, but I believe that neither conflict was done for national security nor for the moralistic reasons presented.

I find it funny how the entire world hates the US when we intervene into a dictators country but the minute we decide not to help the whole world hates us for NOT getting involved.
Perhaps it is because, while Amercian as a people are genuine, our leaders are frequently not. What positive thing did we accomplish in Somalia for the lives and cost? Why did we support Saddam when we knew he was killing hundreds of thousands of Kurds 20 years ago? Not even a peep in our press nor a word of censure from the admin. The world does not trust our inconsistent standards is the real problem.
