Should leaders reflect those they lead?
    #4846216 -

Based on nothing but my own limited observations, I think few men have the capacity for leadership on a large scale, and of those even fewer can do it well.

So, if the skills for leadership are so rare, why should we expect the individuals who posses them to be a representation of the "average" citizen?

Shouldn't a leader be expected to stand out?

Watch C-Span sometime (or whatever your national equivalent may be) and see if you can tell most of these baby kissers apart.

Large scale? How about small scale?

From what I observe, lying, pettiness, and obsfucation occur almost immediately. It is as if some form of madness takes over. These types are usually spineless in other situations yet put on false bravado with some organization or gang to back them up.

And the abuses get much worse when someone uniquely unqualified gets put in charge wherein their position cannot be challenged.

I once read that a good leader asks his followers where it is they want to go and he then, he agrees to take on the responcibility of getting them there.

I liked that take on good leadership. It makes the job of leading one of actual leading in service of the peoples will.

Often we see leaders lead the people in the direction of the leaders will playing a role in service to the self, instead of service to others.

The first sort of leader does reflect those they lead to a Tee, they must. The second sort of leader is in self reflective mode and does not neccesarily reflect those he leads.

Self reflective leading is not a bad place to be if you are a self lead person. I personally think that anyone who takes on the responsibilities of leadership over others has to switch to the mode of reflecting the peoples will and that is one of service to others, not the self, to be a true leader in the essence of the word.

Good topic!

So you're saying as long as the leaders end goal is in line with the people then the means do not matter?

I managed a large crew at a satellite communication company in Silicon Valley. During my first departmental meeting, I let everyone know that my function was not to lord over them, but to get them the tools, training, parts, and engineering assistance needed to get the job done; that we wear all of a team each playing an individual role.

I took an active interest in everyone, ACTUALLY listened, and learned every station on my production line so that I could undertand what they were talking about. Within three months, we increased production on a very mature line almost 40% with no added staff. Absenteeism dropped to a record low and our crew won the best quality award for six months straight while cutting our return rate in half.

Why? Because I cared and 'made' everyone feel important by giving them a regular voice and quickly addressing their concerns.

That folks, is leaderhip.

hey,
well i think that large and diverse populations are more difficult to represent.  i suppose that the leaders responsibility is to the population he represents, the individual to him/herself, and that large masses of people have no sense of responsibility whatsoever.  it must be strange to be the president and think "what do i do with all these people?", i guess i would already have a plan by the time i got in office.  i see the problem in the mass of people being unable to cooperate willfully (not so much the leader being a weak human being, he'll get what's coming to him), but it's because they value their individuality!  If everyone in the crowd is behaving as an individual, they all have one thing in common.  If they form small groups of voluntarily cooperating individuals, there will be several differently structured organizations.
The size of an organization (in which i would willfully participate) is limited by the level of effective and rational communication between all participating members.  I think that by communicating the foundations for organization are laid; the terms for group cooperation are spelled out when communication is healthy.
So who is the leader if everything happens by group consensus?  i think mediation between groups foreign to eachother is all that is needed...diplomacy between organizations.  the challenge to diplomats (the closest i can get to a leader for now) is to represent the common (agreed upon) interests of group A, in terms that group B can understand.  the diplomat has to boil down the questions and concerns of each individual into a common good.

any more and i won't know what i'm talking about, but get back, this is good stuff, read any huxley? :sun:

for now i say the mass of people has no direction, and any direction for the whole population is perverse

I didn't say or get into that. Now you are switching topic matter. Your question gets into the conflicts between the objective goals of some and the subjective morality issues of right and wrong means for others. I don't care to get into that on the forum at this time.

I was just wondering about that statement. Peoples will, isn't going to be the same on every issue. But they may be united for one common goal...but differ on how to go about achieving that goal. But if you don't want to go there....then we don't have to.

That does sound like good leadership. How did you handle conflicts?

I like the model of leadership that Jesus set forth. When he washed the feet of his disciples, he demonstrated that in order to lead, one must serve. Unfortunately, all too often, leaders have their own interests in mind, rather than those of their followers.

Swami, I think what you describe is great example of leadership on a small scale, a bureaucratic position, where efficiency is most important and sadly most often ignored.
But, what I'm considering is more the role of The Leader; the guy who has to stare all the options in the face regardless of how many views are expressed and choose a direction for the group as a whole, and this is where the question arises of how closely they should reflect the views of their people.
For example, the idea of society as a melting pot (which, while not the most important, is I think a vital function of a diverse and healthy society) would mean that for the most part government would be representative of a shapeless, faceless, volatile, gray mass.
At this point the goal, I think, would not be to give direction to this mass, which by its nature will spread wherever unchecked, but to ensure that it does not destroy itself (policing) and its surroundings (diplomacy) plus safeguarding an open forum to promote free exchange and growth both physical as well as ideological, and any over representation of a particular group is and would be counterproductive.
I may be rambling a bit, but my point is that while the most qualified leader might look and act like Joe down the street, I don't think either is required for the job, or relevant in the selection.
Perhaps I'm naive.

"So who is the leader if everything happens by group consensus?" -daimler

Even in a true democracy of one vote for every individual, I think the group would have to acknowledge an officer who's duty would be to grab the wheel when haste becomes a necessity and a consensus has not been reached. This individual would of course be held accountable for any and all actions taken upon the expiration of their term. I think Roman Dictators were given six months before control reverted to the Senate.
Though because of an over-representation of the wealthy in the Senate, one of them gained influence with the soldiering classes and became Emperor, or Cesar to be exact.
