my scorpion had babies!! (*UPDATE*)
    #4840634 -

Okay, so I've had this scorpion for almost two years right? And it's been growing more and more fat but never molted. For a long time now, I've been expecting it to molt and come out as this huge fucking beast, but ... nothing!

Then, the other night I looked into the cage where he was hiding under his rock and I saw something white on his head. Immediately I thought he was finally molting, but then I looked closer and saw tiny little legs. Then I realized that it was a tiny baby scorpion!

Apparently he is a she, and her whole back is COVERED with the little white grubby looking things! And the craziest thing of all is that she hasn't even been around another scorpion since I got her! I really don't know how she got pregnant. It's like the insectoid emaculate conception! LOL!

I do know that when scorpions mate they grab each others claws and spin around, and when the mating dance is over the males' belly opens up and a sperm sac is deposited onto the ground. Then the female positions herself above it swallows the sperm sac with her belly. I remember hearing that some creatures that reproduce like this can save the spermsacs until they find suitable conditions to raise babies, and THEN they impregnate themselves... I don't know if scorpions do this, but I can't think of any other explaination!

This isn't a picture of my scorpion, but it looks exactly the same. It's an emperor scorpion by the way, and her name is Vlad the Impaler...

yeah, they definitely can't get out of the cage...

Even though most people get all freaked out by scorpions, I take this as a good sign. Babies are always a sign of new life and opportunity, no matter what the creature is!

I wonder if its possible for them to hermaph in the scenario of not having the chance to reproduce, kinda like the whole Jurrasic Park concept. Im pretty sure that it can happen in nature. Or maybe i just got fooled by a holywood movie.

that's what someone else said, but I really don't think so because *arachnids* and other arthropods have very specialized, mechanical reproductive parts, whereas frogs have soft parts that can morph. Plus when frogs to that, they don't get themselves pregnant. That scenario happens only when the population doesn't have enough of a certain sex for reproduction. If a population is all females, some will change into males to mate with the other females, but they don't get themselves pregnant.

I hate scorpions, I dont know why. They've always just made me uneasy seeing them crawling on the floor of my garage once in a while.  :seeya:

Congrats with all your scorpion baby's. Just a raondom question; Don't scorpions eat there own offspring like some kinds of fish and other insects? That would be to bad realy.

they will start to crawl off of her back in about 2 weeks and after that she might mistake them for food and must be separated.

I'd love to send little baby scorpions out to y'all, but I don't know if they would survive in the mail, even if I let them grow up a bit I would need to use a special shipping service.

This is true for scorpions many of them are imported after mating and they will hold the pregnancy until conditions are ideal. In a couple of days the babies should start turning darker in color. At this time they will probably start feeding at this time. the mother typically helps them feed by catching prey and letting them feed on it. You can leave them with her until they move away from her and spend most of their time on their own. As long as their kept fed they can be left together indefinitely. The only time you may run into trouble is when there are other large adults in the tank. But most times the mother protects them anyway. Emperor and desert hairy scorpions do well in colonies as long as they have enough food and cover for the loners. But I've seen Emperors tend to sleep in large groups.Good luck.

sweet, someone who actually knows shit about scorpions. It's pretty hard to find detailed info on specific aspects of raising scorpions on the internet.

So when they turn dark and move away from the mom I can put them all together in a small tank and feed them small crickets? or should I crush the crickets to help them along?
