Wondering if such a program exists?
    #4835114 -

I'd really like to get a program that would allow me to remove certain instruments from various songs that I have on my computer.

Anyone know of such a thing? Or anything close to it?

If the songs are in midi format you can just get about any sequencing software to do it. I use Sonar. Sorry if I can't be of more help.

Are you looking for a free program? If so, i don't know.

But you can probably do it with Adobe Audition.

...And maybe even Acid Audio. I'm not sure about that though.

Nah, price isn't a concern. It doesn't matter how much it is.

I'll look into Adobe Audition for now, thanks.

If you are talking about real audio, like from a CD, im pretty sure that is impossible as of right now. The only thing close to that would be to slice out certain frequencies.
A CD is multiple tracks mixed into 2 tracks, a left and a right. There are ways to pull something out of the mix, but it wont be pure, or perfectly clean, you will still hear a good bit of other things.

The only way to do what your suggesting is to figure out how to replicate the sound, then learn the notes and play it yourself.

Actually EQing to get out some instruments it's not as difficult or noneffective as it seems. It is quite reasonable to the extent that there will always be some harmonics that will remain there and that you could unintentionally take out some other things. (although you're completely right in that it would be impossible to mute an instrument completely without affecting the rest of the mix)

As a rule of thumb is very hard to take out completely a sound, but the less instruments on a give sequence and the more precise EQing/frequency muting you can do (it's more about effort than programs) the better results you could get.

I.E. a guitar track on a Lenny kravitz song would be horrible to take out and it would completely destroy the vocals, part of the bass and so on.
On a techno track you could take out almost completely the crash of a drum set and only notice a little roll off on the highs of the track.

I would recommend for you (original poster) a program that can perform parametric and hopefully para-graphic EQing, and some muting of certain frequencies (I forgot how that is called, but I could search it if you want) for the best results. Also a bit of theoretical knowledge about the specific ranges of each instrument would be nice.

I hope that was somehow useful, and please excuse my English, I'm not that good when it comes to technicalities

Adobe products are perfectly fine.

(Minus Acrobat Reader because its a memory hog and takes a while to load up the first time)

Hmm, that's too bad.

I was speaking with someone a while ago that mentioned having a program that had songs that would allow you to remove instruments from them.

I don't remember the name of the program though. It obviously wouldn't be as good, but does anyone know the name of the program?

May I inquire what kind of music/instruments do you want to change specifically? That way I could point you better to a program that could perform what you're looking for. I remember a few off the top of my head, but depending on the use you intend them for some will perform better than others.

Some good general porpouse programs:

Very good for muting some frequencies, you can find it free

Also, sony's soundforge can edit almost anything given that you get some of the free plugins that are around.

Anyway, that's a pretty broad recommendation, if you post an example of what you're trying to do then I'll try to find something that suits your needs

It's going to take some work I think. I doubt any program will be able to just do it with a click of a button.

Theoretically it would work the same way a karaoke machine does, by dropping certain frequencies. It would be tough to do, and it would affect the sound of the rest of the music as well.
