Dead animals stuffed full of drugs thrown over jail wall
October 17, 2005 - scotsman.com

PRISONERS have been smuggling drugs into Saughton Prison in dead animal carcasses.

Prison guards have been told to watch out for friends throwing them over the perimeter fence.

It has been reported that the bodies of rabbits, seagulls and even cats have been used as vehicles for drugs.

Fellow inmates said the smuggling tactic has sometimes left the prison yard looking like an animal morgue.

The prisoners and their accomplices have been arranging rendezvous times and parts of the prison which they know will be unwatched to carry out the operation.

One prisoner said: "It is an absolutely disgusting thing to do but then again it is pretty ingenious. It goes to show the lengths some of these guys will go to to get drugs on the inside.

"I'd be surprised if the guards haven't already cottoned on because some days the prison grounds look more like an animal morgue than a jail."

The Scottish Prison Service admitted guards have been asked to keep watch for drugs being smuggled into Saughton in unusual ways.

A spokeswoman said: "People will exercise incredible ingenuity when trying to smuggle drugs into prison. Staff are constantly vigilant in an effort to prevent these attempts and situations such as this illustrate the difficulties prison staff face in keeping drugs out."

Animal groups have condemned the practice amid fears animals may be deliberately killed to be used in the smuggling scheme.

RSPCA spokeswoman Doreen Graham said: "This is one of the lowest things I have ever encountered in my time here. It is extremely disturbing.

"What needs to be looked at is how they are getting these corpses. Are they being deliberately killed to act as vehicles to distribute drugs?

"We would be interested in seeing some of the corpses to do our own forensic tests on them to establish this - this is totally unacceptable."

"The other issue is health and safety. These drugs could be contaminated if kept inside dead animals and could prove fatal.

"I cannot believe the absolute, sheer sickness of this - it is depraved."

Tom Wood, chairman of the Edinburgh Action on Alcohol and Drugs Team, said he had never heard of animals being used to smuggle drugs into jails.

He said: "It doesn't sounds like it would be a very successful method. The most common route of getting drugs into prisons has always been via visits."

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Drugs Forum said heroin is the biggest problem in Scottish jails. It is often used in preference to cannabis as it is harder to detect.

Heroin remains in the system for only around three days, whereas cannabis can sometimes be detected in the body up to a month after use.
