h2o2 + manure
    #479166 - 12/04/01 09:16 AM (15 years, 11 months ago)

If h2o2 is good for getting rid of contams, and it degrades in light, could you put some dry manure in a clear plastic bag, pour in a bunch of h202, and leave it out in the sun? Seems like in about a week you'd have sterilized, hydrated manure, and you could poke a hole in the bag and squeeze out the excess water. I'm just not interested in cooking manure to sterilize it. Any thoughts?

Unfortunetly, I think that the H2O2 would accomplish the opposite of what you would want. From what I understand, when you use dung you usually want to pasteurize rather than sterilize to kill mold but leave some beneficial bacteria behind. I believe that the H2O2 would kill the bacteria but not kill the mold, the same way that the H2O2 can help with sterility against bacteria but will not kill your myceilium. Since it seems that with dung you don't have to reach absolute sterilization temperatures you could pretty much just boil it in a covered pot.
Any one agree/disagree with me?

There, I answered someone else's question, now would someone please answer my post from yesterday? Please?

Quite so, psyphon. Suzie, with dung there's not a whole lot of room for improvisation. Either bake it or steam it for a couple hours.

For your dried dung: Pasteurizing does little more than kill bugs, and some plants. You could very possibly do this with h2o2, however I wouldn't just use straight 3% out of the bottle. I've done this many a time, this is what I do: I use 1:4 peroxide to water solution and moisten my compost/dung to the desired consitancy, then put it in the pan, bowl, whatever. Then I crumble a colonized cake and mix it in with the dung, then cover in foil, let colonize, then initiate pinning. Its as simple as that. The dung, actually the enzymes in it, will slowly degrade the peroxide on its own, and besides the mycelium isn't harmed by small amounts of peroxide such as this, and will have no trouble growing through and further breaking it down. The peroxide will however act as a barrier to outside contaminants, keeping them at bay until the mycelium has fully colonized and can fight off contams on its own. In closing, yes you can do it with peroxide, but don't go through the trouble of sitting it in the sun. (actually minor amounts of heat would break it down even faster than the sun)

Hi suzie_girl, maybe nobody tried this procedure before that's why the lack of replies. You can try that as an experiment but i doubt it will work, h2o2 destroys the spores cell walls, so it's good fighting some contams at the beginning and before they settle, once the contam spores germinate even with h2o2 they will fight survive, that's why sterilization with a PC is needed, some deviate a bit by using the microwave to sterilize... anyway, do you want to use it has a substrate, as a casing layer or as a spawn material ?

Peace,
MAIA

Thanks for the replies. Was thinking of using it as a casing layer. Hydrating with diluted h202 sounds like a good idea.
