Running out of ideas...

Hey. I've been trying to grow PC australia for some time now. I'm using PF style jars with BRF/vermiculate and incubating the jars at around 75F. I've had germination and limited growth but after repeated tries my best jar only ever got 50% colonated after a couple of months. I've played around with the water content in the substrate, and I've just put a heater in to raise the temp to 83F. Any ideas why I'm getting such slow growth? Anybody successfully grown PC australia? Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

try sterilizing the place where you store the jars and lay a layer of perlite on the bottom with water, wipe the half colonized jars with alcohol wipes and slightly twist the caps of the jars open, this happened with my maza jars, they require a lot of oxygen, humidity and controled temp. just a suggestion.

Thanks, I'll try it. It's my first time growing and I just don't know what I'm doing wrong. Are there any easier strains to grow, B+ perhaps?

me and about 5 of my friends all started growing together and the first strain we used was ecuador. those babies are really versatile and will hardly ever let you down even in the most diverse environment

My two suggestions would be: * the temperature - colonizing temp for cubensis should be low to mid 80s. You mentioned that until just recently it was 75 - substrate will colonize at this temp but a lot more slowly. The more quickly mycelium colonizes a given volume, the better. If it doesn't colonize fast enough, it will occasionally "run out of gas", at least that's been my friend's experience. You did mention that you just added a heater to bring it to 83 - perfect. That should help. * Air, as someone else earlier in the thread mentioned. When the jars are largely colonized, make sure they are in a nice clean area and untape the holes in the lids (if that's what you have, lids with taped holes thru which you innoculated). This really adds a boost to colonization times. Good luck!

Thanks, I'll wait and see if the raised temperature makes any difference. I've innoculated a batch of new jars today, so hopefully... I'm using a heat mat in a card board box with some insulation, it's keeping a steady 83/4F, but the bottom of the jars may be a little hotter. What temperature is too hot for them?

try and keep the temp below 90f, id construct a lift so the jars are not directly on the bottom and resting on the heat source or on a layer of something that is laying on the heat source. keep us posted

hmm, good idea, I'll put something in to lift them up a bit. I think I'm going to have to get a new incubation chamber anyway, cause the box I have can only fit 8 or so jars in it. What setup would you reccomend?

what i have (and i like it the best) is a large rubber made container that i have completely covered in black electrical tape (took some time but keeps the light out completely) i have two heat mats underneath. inside, i have this little metal grid thing that i bought from a hardware store that lifts the jars up about two inches. i have a air filter pump that my friend built me, it pushes fresh contam free O2 in and takes the Co2 out, after my jars have colonized for about two weeks i losson the cap a little, about two weeks later i flip or case (depending on how i feel) the cakes into my terrarium. I made my terrarium custom from a used aquarium i got from a pet store. it is a 20 gallon aquarium that i also put the electrical tape on except for the top (so the mushrooms all grow up strait and uniform) the tape on the sides prevents the light from reflecting off the sides of the terrarium. my friend tubed the the air filter into my terrarium as well with a valve so i can turn it off and on. i put wet sterile perlite on the bottom to keep humid. i use my high pressure sodium lamps that i use for my pot. theses are located above my terrarium and are ran for 3 hour chunks twice a day. the top of my terrarium is cut plexy glass with these little stickable towel holders on the top so i can lift it up. i put about 100 dollars into it, (some of the stuff i got cheap and used, some i stole from work) but this is the set up i find the most user friendly. i hardly pay attention to them and before i know it BOOM a phat qp and a long happy weekend.
