Trying to find a degree program.. help?
    #4762166 -

Hey all, was wondering if anyone might be able to help me.

To make a long story short, I recently graduated with a Liberal Arts degree (four-year) in Communication, and I'd like to go back to school for a Computer Science degree. Specifically, Computer Information Systems or Computer Information Technology. Not quite the same as a straight up Computer Science degree.

It is a BS program, and I'm having a very difficult time finding a list of colleges in a specific area that offer that program. Do any of you know any good web sites on which I might be able to search for schools based on a degree program? Every time I've tried to find something like that, it's a page for online schools, which I'd like to avoid. I remember several years ago there were pages that had a simple set of options, like Degree Program and State, and you could browse through them.

In any case, I'd appreciate the help a lot. I've come to find that there aren't any jobs for people in the LibArts field, but it IS a very good well-rounded education.

Oh God man...you got a degree in Communications? You might as well wipe your ass with that degree (I'm sure you already know that). Liberal Arts stuff may make you "well-rounded", but nobody cares about that stuff in the real world. What people care about in the real world is if you can do something to offer a good or a service. Nobody is going to give a shit if you did a ten page essay on the impact of impressionism on the art world or the works of Karl Marx.

I urge you to NOT get a computer science degree. It is much more fruitful to get a bunch of valuable certifications (CISCO, etc..) than it is to get a computer science degree. Talk to anybody in the computer field and they will tell you that same thing.

One thing my friends and I have learned in our lives (I'm in my mid 20's) is that you should only go to college if you are going to finish and if your degree program is something that you can make money off of. You can't make money with a lot of university degrees.

go to a technical school. 4 year colleges are bullshit.

There are a bunch of very nicely priced computer schools which can give you real life training and such ranging from game design, web design, securities, digital animation, etc, etc. Degree's dont mean shit anymore. In fact, i dont even list my degrees on my resume because i foudn they didnt help at all, and sometimes even hindered.

Computer Information Systems is a good one if you want to get into IT work. That was my major before I dropped out, but now I'm in an IT specialist program. I like it even more, but yout school might not offer it.

At my old school they offered a Management Information Sciences which is computers for dumb business students. It was not as intensive and more practical.

IT work is going overseas - I wouldnt bother. Technical schools are rip-offs usually. I recommend getting certified instead.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Yes, specifically my degree is in Speech Communication, which I am now well aware is useless. I was under the impression that some company, somewhere, might need someone able to communicate well with others, but then again, that's the line I was being fed by the college.

I am looking to get into IT work, which is why I'm looking into CIS as opposed to CS. I do have a fair amount of computer aptitude, so the business "dumbed down" computer degree isn't quite what I'm looking for- I'd rather do the technical work since I don't have a business background.

A technical school for the certifications isn't out of the question, although my biggest concern is tuition. Coming out of a four year college, I'm well into debt, and I'm not sure that most companies would be willing to consider tuition assistance for non-college schools.

Can anyone recommend any good "technical schools" for that field of study in either the NYC or upstate NY area?

see what your community college has to offer before checking out the techical schools. usually they will offer the same program for a fraction of the cost & bullshit.
