Use the public hub list. There is a list with hundreds of servers you can connect to. Like I mentioned before, some severs require a minimum share on your part to connect.

Sort by connection percentage.

it's part of the reason that usenet is better, what you DL is generaly what you
get, need somehtng, make a request and in a few hours it's there, the
servers are hundreds of times faster then p2p, I can dl about 500kbps from usenet
with my current connection, one gig in less than an hour

I've heard of Usenet and I've heard people talk about how great it is. But I'm still not even sure what exactly it is. Is it a centralized server maintained by (____)? Who puts the contents on the server (or what/who ever you download from)?

I guess you can't argue with that.

However, maybe he already owns what he wants to download?

it's about 70% of internet traffic, with more than 100k servers moving files
from one to another in a text format it allows rapid transfer time, the servers
are generaly maintained by your ISP, there are also pay servers but start by
checking if your ISP has usenet, since it's server based you dont have the
limitations on download speed like you do with p2p.

Am I mistaken or are there illegal file transfers happening?

If so, doesn't the ISP care?

You have to pay for most of those programs. Morpheus, imesh, limewire, etc are free. So they may suck, but they're free. I find if you download each program you can find the one that works best for you and delete the rest

pay for what? soulseek & bittorrent are free.

Lies! :hotidea:

So for those of you who have usenet and services of the kind, how well does it work for you? Have you found pretty much everything you've ever needed?

Is it good for music (albums)? That's my main concern.

I wasnt impressed by the music selection. mostly big name stuff...I can find more rare and independent stuff on soulseek & oink. depends on what you listen to, though. I'm into electro, idm, italo, industrial, etc - little known stuff that just isnt found on usenet.

yes, anything I want and isnt currently posted I request, I usualy upload
something to make sure m request is filled, it's a share system but most
people are quite helpful, there are several dozen mp3 groups to pull from
that cover virtualy every genre

one of the benefits of usenet, no one tracks your IP

dont be scared, just get in and do it... you'll be hooked in no time.

And you do this through your ISP for a monthly fee?

I have Comcast (unfortunately), I suppose I should call them and ask if they have any newsgroups? Is that what it's called?

Same here for the most part.

Sometimes it doesn't have the unknown songs I'm looking for. Other than that, DC is my favorite p2p program.
