Exploding canning jars

Id like to share with you the latest addition to my stupid deeds list. I boiled some pots but forgot to take the tape off the lids to let the air out. They must have been boiling for a good hour.

As I was in the kitchen talking to my mother the pot exploded, brown rice flour and vermiculite all over the place. I ran over and turned the gas off as quick as I could, gave me a bit of a fright I thought the cooker was about to explode. As I was cleaning the cooker, my ma was helping me I was too dumb to consider that the other jars might blow up, and thats just what they did, we were both beside the pot when another jar exploded. Vermiculite and glass flying everywhere. I was scared shitless I thought id just badly injured my mother we went out the back and luckily I took the worst of it. She only had a small cut on her wrist and a bit of a burn on her face.

My hand was a different story thought, seeing as I was right beside the pot the explosion got my hand pretty bad. At first it looked alot worse than it was, there was blood everywhere but I cleaned it up and noticed it was only a handful of small cuts and burns. I got some glass stuck in it but nothing serious.

Well thats 4th failed attempt and this time it was a total disaster. I take it as a sign I should stop trying to grow shrooms for a while. It unbelievably stupid on my part, first of all not to take the tape off and second I should have got the pot outta the kitchen immediately.
Anyways if theres anyone out there thats more of an idiot than me and are considering growing shrooms, learn from my mistake. BE CAREFUL!! I learned the hard way.

I should have taken pictures, its cleaned up now but you should have seen it. I could hardly believe there was vermiculite and brown rice flour everywhere. On floor, on the walls, in my hair, the majority of it ended up on the ceiling. It was a real bitch cleaning it up.

My hands still stinging pretty bad, any of you know any good techniques to get little slivers of glass out?

Thanks man, it scared the crap outta me, thats not the first time I nearly killed my ma by accident.

I could scrape most of the stuff off the walls with a spachella but it hit the roof pretty hard, the scraper wasnt enough, it was a real bitch to get that off,

Maybe a doctor would be best for that? And probably a lot less painful :smile: Hopefully you feel better soon, and if you decide to try growing again I wish you the BEST of luck! :smile:

are you kidding?
a pc exploding is ALOT more dangerous than exploding jars, seeing as how your jars are capable of flying out of the exploding pc in pieces or in whole, plus theres the extreme temp steam and force from the pc.

dont worry man, dont get discouraged, just take a break for a while, and do more research on safety.

btw, you grow shrooms with your mom??? :jawdrop:

Yeah, and a coleman stove. Thats the last time im boiling jars in the kitchen. My mothers kitchen anyway.

Yea thats what I heard, if a normal pot caused this much damage, I dont even wanna imagine what a pressure cooker would have done.

I had a PC explode, like you I was right next to it, I'm glad my reaction time
is fast, as soon as I heard something that wasnt right I looked and saw a bulge
and started to hit the ground just as the lid was blowing off... I was cooking
collard greens and I had to replace the drywall in the kitchen because it wasnt coming off

it evacuated the PC in less than a second, the lid went litteraly through the
roof and I caught a little in the face and a lot on my torso, PCs can be
dangerous if you dont pay attention to them, have the knowledge to opperate
them properly or do not maintain them.

To top it all off the ceilings gonna need a new paint job. My self esteems at an all time low right now. She was cool enough to let me go about my business in her kitchen, now what does she think? I showed her what a responsible guy I am by nearly blowing up her cooker and almost killing or badly injuring the both of us.

My brother kept telling me I was gonna blow the kitchen up sooner or later. I didnt quite blow the kitchen up but I made a mother of a mess.

I got most of the crap off the ceiling but it left tons of stains. It looks like shit theres no way im gonna get it all off. Lucky im not a bad painter, ill go get some paint and give it another coat.

The old hand isnt looking too good...

You should have seen it before I cleaned it up. Its feeling okay now I think the marks are only burns hopefully I wont have to open the cuts again to take out glass.

Im regretting not having taken a picture of the whole mess. I could have added it to a grow guide and said if you dont put air holes in the jars this is what youll get.

I dont grow shrooms with my mom, ive been blessed with a cool, easy going mother. When I was a kid she never hassled me about smoking weed, in fact I smoked weed with her when I was around 13. Shes not much into shrooms and doesnt think its a good idea for me to grow them but she never gives me a hard time about it.

i still dont understand how or why it exploded? the tape would have just been pushed up if there was that much pressure inside the jars. how was their that much pressure inside the jars anyways. how can boiling a jar build up enough pressure to make it explode but not enough pressure to push up the tape?

I dont know but it happened, the first jar didnt explode, the lid flew off it and it had so much pressure when it made the lid of the pot hit the roof. The second jar exploded about 2 minutes after I turned the gas off. One jar exploding caused the other 4 to blow up too. At least half of every jar was missing when I looked.

The tape seemed to still be there.

I think there wasnt enough water in the bottom because the bottom of alot of the jars were black and the vermiculite at the bottom was burned.
