Damn dude. You make it sound like a cult or something. No one in this thread is trying to convince him of what to do one way or the other. No need to be so defensive about it. You make it sound like an us and them thing. I really doubt my uncle would lie to me or is mistaken for that matter as he is in the union and thats what he told me so its not bullshit. He likes his job and I have no reason to dislike the union either. I actually applied for the electricians apprenticeship program here but never got called back.

I have no problem with anyone that decides to go non-union as long as they don't spread false anti-union propaganda but I hear it all the time. The fact is unions have to constantly fight this while all we are trying to do is to make sure that regular american working stiff can still make a respectable living but it gets harder everyear because of the bullshit lies that are spread. If employers had their way and there where no unions the standard of living in this country would plummet there would be a super rich upperclass and a poor lower class and the middle class as we know it would cease to exist

thanks, I'm a proud member of IBEW local 103 so any information I give you about the unions is 100 percent the truth from a union member. Unions exist to take care of the people that belong to the union and to ensure that they have the highest standard of living possible don't listen to these anti-union propagandist who don't know what they are talking about they are just feeding you misinformation and standard anti-union propaganda. My union gets these videos these anti-union companies show their employees to get them to vote against going union. Any union member will tell you it's bullshit if the stuff they where saying is true than why does anybody join a union in the first place ask them to answer that question. I can tell you first hand I make a great living at what I do far better than my friends who are in the same trade but non-union.

Being a member of a particular union does not make you an expert on all unions or unions in general. You refuted what QM said about unions in his area when you clearly do not live there, and thus did not know what you are talking about.

the problem is when people say bad things about unions they always speak about unions as a whole in his first post he never mentioned "some" unions being better than others perhaps the unions are not as good down there but up here they ensure the best working conditions around.

I said the unions "here". Also you do the same thing and speak for unions as a whole.

I really don't know about that. FL is known as a non-union state even though we really do have unions and we definately have a middle class. I would have put myself in the upper-middle class growing up and my father never worked for a union and neither did any of our neighboors.

Alright then well i can't speak for the unions down there but I can speak for them up here in the North East and Pennsylvania has a proud union tradition so I would still say thats the way to go.

honestly man try going down to the local union hall and get a list of their union shops. Call them up and see if they are looking for shop workers. Explain that you are looking to get into the union but looking for work in the meantime. I worked in a union shop loading trucks and delivering stock for about 8 months before I go in. That way when you apply the union can see you are already working for a union shop and you will probably stay with the same company when you start your field work.

I just went down today. I was hoping to speak with an instructor who would answer my questions and hopefully direct me toward the appropriate path. All I got was a secretary who basically didn't know shit. I left my e-mail address for her to give to one of the instructors. Who knows if anybody will get back to me.

I definately need some guidance, but I don't want to be calling and bugging a bunch of people. I don't want to be annoying.

Try to find out where they hold their classes. Luckily here our school is located right next to the union hall and often each is run seperately from the other. Here the JATC(joint apprentice training committe) runs the school and the apprenticeship program so they are the ones you need to talk to about getting into an appreticeship.
