from what i understand they make some decent cash.. probably because you are elbow deep in shit all day long. no one else wants to do it.
downside (other than the shite) is that you are on call pretty much 24/7.
decent cash though

Had an uncle who was a plumber. He said there 3 really big things to know:
1. Shit flows down hill. 2. Pay day is Friday. 3. Keep your fingers out of your mouth.

Master plumbers get very good pay. It's a skill that is needed, constantly People call plumbers all the time for little broken parts for toilets, showers, etc and end up paying a few hundred for the bill just because they don't know how to do a simple fix. It's a respectable profession, a little shitty but what isn't

I wish I knew someone willing to take me as an apprentice for any skill.
If you don't have any plans I would take it.

I would take that apprenticeship in a second - what are the details of it, if you don't mind me asking?
Like I_was_the_walrus said, become a plumber and set up large industrial (or residential homes.)
Maybe do house calls for awhile, but that is definitely the bottom end of the profession. You make huge money and work on insanely cool projects doing large scale plumbing..
I wouldn't think twice about it "being a shitty profession."
You will have a solid skill, you will work indoors, you will always be in demand, and you will always have a HIGH wage.

I heard being a plumber is a pretty shitty job. However, if you have a license and own a plumbing company, I imagine you can make a shitload of money. All you have to do is be competent, there are a lot of charlatans out there.

Fuck ya, do it!
Even house calls....if you do it on the side and just charge people cash you can make a fat load of cash.

IF your a contract plumber working on new homes and industrial buildings shit like that, the job is very well paying and easy as fuck. I se the plumbers do there thang at some of the sites I work at and honestly they work 3 or 4 solid hours out of a ten hour day and spent the rest of the time fucking the dog.

From people I've known, it can be a shitty job. You can make a good living doing it and plumbers are always needed. I'd say go for it.

start with library books about plumbing and maybe later buy some to keep
you will need tools, just call up plumbing places and ask around
and yeah you might get some of those quick money for simple work type deals.

i was a plumber for 5 years and never touched any shitty pipes and i was never on call. the ones that are on call are small local plumbing outfits who work residential. I did industrial plumbing, large scale jobs like wal marts and water treatment plants. i was also union. know what your getting into, it is construction so the work does come in spurts. also with union where i am from its five years of school to get your journeyman license. i got out of the trade though.

wrong, wrong and wrong.
you start low end 11-12 an hour but can move up quickly if you know your shit. you are not always in demand. the work comes and goes. and you most def. do not always work indoors! not trying to steer anybody away because it is an excellent trade to have. if your a union plumber from me experience you are a very skilled individual.

My best childhood friend became an electrician, but specializes in A/C, his dad was a plumber; both are living nice and stable. Although I personally don't care for (fucking hate) the political power of unions, they are a helluva way to make a career.
I say go for it.

All I know is that plumbers in my area can easily charge $100+ an hour.
I would imagine however, that its like running any other small business: You need to advertise, get clients, and will have stretches of downtime with no work.
