The reason the appreticeship is so long is because the union insist on the hightest level of training for it's employees. Plus in Mass you need 10,000 hours of on the job training to get your journeyman's license which equals 5 years but at the end you will have the highest level of training in your field.

But...do you understand my dilemma? I would have to wait a whole year to get in. What would I do for this year...putter around the house? And what if they don't accept me? I am really torn on this. This is my future I am talking about and I have no clue what to do. I don't want to screw up. Also, I am old (26) so I can't fuck around much longer when it comes to a "career".

At least with the technical school I can start in two weeks or so and be done in 16 months.

i'm in the same boat as you man. its all a waiting game now. go get a job (or 2jobs) and just make as much as you can and bust your ass for that year. try to get on some side jobs in the field you are doing and just make the best of it. think to yourself "busting my ass now but in a year i will be set for life" 1 year is nothing when you look at it as a career for the rest of your life.

Yes but at the end of the 16 months all you have is a piece of paper saying you did the classroom portion of your training. You still have to find an employer to work your on the job hours before you can even think of getting your license. Plus you will start from square one making very little money. We start are first year apprentices at 14.76 an hour here and you get a raise from about 1.50 to 2.50 an hour every 1000 hours you work at the end of your five years you get your license and make 36.75 an hour plus you get top of the line Health insurance which is not deducted from your paycheck it's part of your working package. Plus you get a great annuity and pension so you can comfortably retire when you are 55 it's great and no non-union will do better for you trust me

Another thing about the union apprenticeship at least hear is you are under contract to work for the union for like 4-5 years after your apprenticeship is over. If for any reason you decide its not for you during the time your under contract they bill you for your five years of schooling(the apprenticeship) and that shit is alot of money. So if you want to be owned then go union. They do pay somewhat better from what I hear and its like impossible to get fired once your in. If they want you to do something dangerous and you don't do it they can't fire you like a normal boss will.

That said I have heard some horror stories about them leaving people to hang. There was a teacher here in my city who was in the Teachers Union. This kid swallowed a hot dog whole in the cafeteria she tried to help him but he still died. She got sued and the Union wouldn't even return her calls and gave her the run around basically screwing her over.

That is 100% pure unadulterated bullshit righ there. I had friends that I went to school with in the union who decided to leave and the union did not go after them for money. That is just more standard anti-union propaganda don't believe it.

but IMO there is nothing better than knowing a trade. you can pretty much get a job anywhere you want to move to.

Actually here it isn't bullshit. There are different unions in different states all doing things differently. I know for a fact that is true here because I know people who are in it. Here in FL the Unions aren't strong so they probably have to do that inorder to survive.

thanks, I'm a proud member of IBEW local 103 so any information I give you about the unions is 100 percent the truth from a union member. Unions exist to take care of the people that belong to the union and to ensure that they have the highest standard of living possible don't listen to these anti-union propagandist who don't know what they are talking about they are just feeding you misinformation and standard anti-union propaganda. My union gets these videos these anti-union companies show their employees to get them to vote against going union. Any union member will tell you it's bullshit if the stuff they where saying is true than why does anybody join a union in the first place ask them to answer that question. I can tell you first hand I make a great living at what I do far better than my friends who are in the same trade but non-union.

Dude...I cannot stress how important this conversation and the advice in it is to me and my life. I am not fucking around. I am trying to decide what to do with my life here.

There are pros and cons to both technical school and the union apprenticeship program:

Tech School (for electrician shit):

PROS:

-I can start in two weeks.
-I have already been accepted.
-I already took a bunch of electrical engineering classes in college. Because of this I will be able to breeze through a lot of the tech program.
-It will only take 16 months.
-I will not be tied to a "union" and because of that the sky is the limit when it comes to how much I want to work and how much I will earn. I could go to work for someone or I could start my own business and make shitloads of money. Not being tied to a union means more opportunity for success, but also more opportunity for failure too.

CONS:

-A tech school degree probably is not as prestigous as a journeyman's license.
-The program might be too easy for me.

Union (for electrician stuff):

PROS:
-I surmise that the training program is top notch.

CONS:
-The program forces you to take college classes. I fucking hated college. I do not want to go back. I got so sick of taking classes that had nothing to do with my major and that were a waste of time.
-The program will take FOREVER. What if I get sick of it and don't want to stick it out for five years? At least with a 16 month program it will go quick and I will be out earning a living soon.
-I don't want me being in the union to limit my opportunities. What if I am unable to get certain jobs or opportunities because I am union?
-The program doesn't start for another year. I would have to sit and wait for it to start.
-There is no guarantee that I would be accepted into the program. What if I forego tech school and wait for the union apprenticeship registration and I don't get accepted? I would be fucked.

No shit! IBEW (electrician) stuff is what I was looking at. The tech school degree is a "Maintenance Electricity and Construction" thing. It goes over residential, commercial, and industrial.

Being a member of a particular union does not make you an expert on all unions or unions in general. You refuted what QM said about unions in his area when you clearly do not live there, and thus did not know what you are talking about.

Damn dude. You make it sound like a cult or something. No one in this thread is trying to convince him of what to do one way or the other. No need to be so defensive about it. You make it sound like an us and them thing. I really doubt my uncle would lie to me or is mistaken for that matter as he is in the union and thats what he told me so its not bullshit. He likes his job and I have no reason to dislike the union either. I actually applied for the electricians apprenticeship program here but never got called back.

I understand you needing to do something quick but think about you future as a whole and not just in the short term. If you can wait till next year to start you apprenticeship you will be set for life. You will make top pay for your trade and have great benefits such as top of the line health insurance and a pension and annuity. If you go the quick route you could be lucky and get a good non-union shop that treats it's employees well but they are few and far between these people are only out to make a prophet for themselves even if it's at the exspense of their employees. A union exist to take care of the people that work for it and they will make sure you and your family are taken care of
