My little salvia. When/how should I prune?

He had two big leaves when I got him a couple months ago. It started wilting and browning, I think from too much heat, so I cut the brown leaves off the top that's why the top is bent over with small leaves.

Anyone know when and how to prune Salvia? I leave him outside all the time but first frost is around the corner.

Definately bring her in before the frost, an East or South window is good, no extra lighting is necessary.  If you pinch (gently pull) the top two smallest leaves off from a stem that is six inches or longer, two new shoots will grow from there.  Mow your lawn, you Hippy! :tongue2:

If you want them to produce leaves from the rear just tip-off the newoborn leaves. This will make it more bushy. Try it!

when a branch is 4" to 6" long
pinch out the apical meristem to encourage branching.

if leaves are not falling off by themselves take off big ones for consumption(, but atleast wait until you have a 12" height and at least 6 good leaves remaining on any branch)

So I shouldn't be pulling any of the leaves off yet? It doesn't seem to be growing taller since I took off the top brown leaves, just getting bushier.

And I rent, so the landlord cuts the grass. No good, goddamn landlords.

I think I read somewhere that browning of the leaves is a sign of too little humidity.Try misting a little more too.

browning might be endemic to the species
after 2 years experimentation with dryer and wetter, mistier and unmystier, I get browning on the older leaves anyway, but too dry makes the young ones brown too.
anything falling from it is good to use.

i wouldnt touch it! looks good looks healthy. Looks lush and stout. When you bring it in thats when she will strech. Then if you like i would prune her down, by taking a couple cuttings.

But for now she looks happy so i would think its best to just let it grow, like a hippy girls arm pits.....
