Ok dude, this all depends on what your hoping to achieve. Firstly all leaves that are 30-50% damaged or yellow should be removed or trimmed to let more light reach the healthy leaves. Also (preferably before flowering) lower branches should be trimmed of at their base to encourage the uper branches to produce more weed. Also u can 'top' the plant just above the node of the two most recent side shoots from the main stem. This will encorage plants to be lower and more bushy. Plants can also be bent. Bending the main stem through 90-180 degrees will encourage greater growth of side shoots.
During flowering leaves will yellow naturally, these must be removed to prevent mould.
Hope this helps,
Please ask if you need to know more.

whats the best way to bend the main stem? Do you start when it is very young and wire it?

I do bending (training) when they have reached their third node, to ensure proper growth time, but still allow for a tender plant, making it easier to bend the stalks.

Trimming is a no-no in my books, unless of course the leaves are diseased or just dieing. All those leaves your trimming off are really just storage tanks for nutrients, and when you start chopping them off, you tend to damage your plants supply of food.

Prune is the wrong word.. I dont think anyone realy prunes a mj plant unless theyre trying to hide it outdoors. You can Cut the top node off of a plant to get 2 or more colas on a plant. you can do a light trim on the very top of a plant with finger nail clippers or the like, and your plant will bush out and give you many colas. Or you can bend the top of the plant over to give the bottom shoots time to grow up top.
But these have all been meantioned.
Bending, or training is how i like to do things. Either with fishing weights or with twist ties to simply tie down the plant. That way your not squizing or braking the plants main stem at all, and when the bottom shoots catch up you just take the weight off.

Oh no, you need to "prune" them unless you want to trim a plant forever. I am talking about if you let a plant bush and never trim any branches, welcome to land of hundreds of small nuggets. Have fun trimming that crap man. Pruning is 100% necessary if you grow large plants. Normally pruning the smallest branches is very smart, when it first grows if you want it to grow higher. It all depends on what you want to achieve and what strain you are growing.

Sativa's if you grow them small, don't need to be trimmed at all. But can be trimmed to the nugs you want. For instance, if you want one large cola, and a few other large style nugs, you only want a few branches. If you only want the large cola, then trim all the other branches, then flower.

Sativa's if you grow them large, well be absolute hell to trim if you do not prune wisely. They will branch everywhere! Rape the bottom of large plants, because they get no light, thus little punny nugs. Little punny nugs SUCK, especially when you have hundreds of them to TRIM. It is WAY EASIER TO TRIM A FEW LARGE NUGGETS.

But we warned, two types of Sativa's grow. One doesn't need as much trimming. The other grows insanely fast, hence needs trimming.

Indica's are way bushier. If you don't trim these, they bundle up at the bottom with tons of nodes. This can be a real probelm with airflow, if the plant is all bunched up. You can get mold from no air exchange.

The best part about pruning or trimming, is you make the branches clones for the next go round. You can strategically trim you plant to give you clones, control plant growth, improve airflow, etc.

In the Mj world they call it lollipopping, and you usually do it only if needed. Usually right before you put them in to flower because your fan leaves are the power source of the plant. If you get rid of all of them you will drastically slow the growth of your plant. The best way is too use bamboo stakes and and spread apart the larger branches so more sunlight hits the main stem. Then i would get rid of the bad leaves and some fan leaves so more light reaches the mid lower branches of the plant. Depending on how big they are i would totally rid the whole bottom of leaves and bud sites total waste of time.

okay you can LST, prune, top, FIM top, or supercrop but it all depends on what you want.... I don't hurt the plant anymore than I have to, and lollipopping is a waste IMO... if you do a SCRoG setup then you shouldn't need to prune, only LST and supercrop to get it into the form you want....

numberthree is right; the leaves have tons of nutes the plants use once in bloom hence, why the leaves turn yellow and fall off near harvest.... plus they catch light which fuels the plant so more leafs mean more herb... this can provide a ton of popcorn bud (especially outdoor) which you can use for hash.... you still end up with more product
