Maintaining a constant temp

I was curious what other people do to keep their incubation chamber at a constant temperature. I was thinking about buying a reptile temp. thermostat but wanted to see if there is a cheaper way to achieve a constant temperature. Any suggestions would be cool.

i just keep a well insulated chamber and put a adjustable aquarium heater in it. I try different settings until its abbout 84-86. speeds up colonization. a small styrofoam cooler with it in a centralized location helps. the glass on the heater gets hot so i usually put it on something ceramic or else in a glass of water.
