cardboard boxes as cropping containers
    #4659363 - 09/14/05 11:17 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

i am wondering if any one has experience using cardboard boxes as a cropping container. if this works it can provide a really cheap container that may only be good for one cycle but can be composted after, unlike polyethylene. i figure that its resistance to contaminaition will only help, my only fear is that the high humidity may deteriorate the box too quickly, although if the substrate colonizes quickly it should maintain its shape well enough eh? and if the seams fall apart duck tape it i guess. whats the verdict?

I used them pleurotus a few times. They work well for these but in this case the mushrooms eat through and fruit off the outside of the box. I had some probs with the deterioration factor, but all in all it worked well. There was some packing tape on it, though. I wonder if something like would work with az or cyans.... Anyway, w/tape I am sure it would work for you.

cardboad has no resistance to contaminants

sorry pris i guess i meant to say that it is highly selective. most common contam's will not grow on it therefore it RESISTS GROWTH OF MOST COMMON CONTAMINATION

LYNX- how did that affect the pinning on the substrate surface?
and if a species that is not normally known to fruit (cubensis) on cardboard and that is not typically a shelf type fungus is used do you think it will work better than a shelf type fungus that does fruit on it

edit : also would the use of a plastic liner be necessary to reduce any vegetative growth on the outside of the box which may inhibit a maximum pinset?

sounds like this would work to me.

Just line the inside of a box with a black plastic trash bag, and cover with another bag to hold in humidity. It would make cleanup real easy do do it this way.

Good idea, fungophiliac. Although, I think I may have heard about someone doing this before.

yeah, cardboard boxes are often lined with plastic and used as fruiting containers. I was by no means the first, but here's a pic from the bulk neglect report:

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

Boxes worked real well as far as pins are concerned. I must admit I didnt dry and weigh but crops seemed as good or better as a regular sawdust block. It stayed really moist. I don't think the body form has anything to do with it (especially since it is often variable by condition). Oysters, however, perform better on woody substrates. PsiCubes perform better on grain/compost/dung substrates and I doubt there would be pinning on cardboard. Especially if it holds its super flat surface, since that would be the opposite of a good casing texture. Don't quote me on this but I *think* sawdust has been experimented as part of a compost blend for PsiCubes with meager results. However, solely as a container it might prove awesome at grabbing and holding moisture with less of a risk of over-saturation. That would be the gain from not using plastic (which lots have done and shown in pics on this site). So ultimately it comes down to your question about whether to use plastic or not. I've done casings in reverse before. That is I put the top casing down in a container, then spawn and flip the whole thing out on perlite. I had great pinset off the top and uncased sides. So I don't think any colonization through the box would negatively effect the pinning on the top as much as the potential moisture increase would positively effect it.

After all of that rambling.... I think it would be a neat experiment for you to do and post. Maybe box (no lining) vs. box (lining) vs. stand alone casing. My best guess would be that differences would be minor- with the the non-lining and stand alone out-performing the lining due to the air exchange and possibly contam issues. You have my highest kudos for the recycling ideas.

i wonder if the box and/or bag would hold up to pasteurization through steam. particularly using agar's fridge tek

I lysol'd the bag and box thoroughly.
the box would probably weaken or fall apart during pasturisation.
