Several million light years away....
    #4653885 - 09/13/05 03:29 AM (18 years, 6 months ago)

A distant solar system with a planet gravity twice that of earth. Invaders, toxic mutant vegetation system with highly developed aggressive consciousness. The planet has been invaded by this organism, but resistance formed and now years have gone by.

This is a SOS signal, the colonists are under distress. I repeat, the colony is under attack. This is mere intergalactic electronic record. It may or may not reach its destination.  Send help.  :rocket:

Here is your homework assignment (and for any SETI buffs out there):

Part 1

Figure out how much continuous transmitting power it would take for a directional beam from that distance to reach earth with a receiving power level of 100 nanowatts.

Part 2

Now multiply that by all the possible transmitting frequencies.

Part 3

Now figure out how much power it would take to transmit that same signal to all areas of space equally.

Hint: Essentially you would need a star.

The proof is in the pudding.

You're forgetting that the radio signal travelled with the speed of light for millions of years. That makes it old news.

We wouldnt need a star. The Tsar Bomba (50 megatons) delivered 1% of solar output during the 1/1.000.000 second it exploded (what we see of a nuke is the heated air transmitting their charge to the enviroment, in space it would be a 1/1.000.000 second pulse)

We could use a couple of megatonners to send out an SOS in morse code using 2 times three Tsars and three linear hydrogen bombs in the sequence ... --- ...

No seriously, something related to the resonance of hydrogen would be better understood by the flesheating veggies from planet Vegan to signal Earth is inhabitable too.

After the millions of years the signal takes to reach them we either own the Milky Way or no two atoms of the pyramids cling together anymore :smirk:

When that was first proposed in the late 50's or early 60s, only 1 of 34 cosmologists and physicists thought of that. It is hardly obvious nor would any creature without similar technology be able to pick it up.

Uh huh. Anywhere from 5-85% of the light would be absorbed by the atmosphere and would not be seen from stars systems blocked by the curvature of the earth. So many hundreds would be needed to be fired off at regular intervals all around the globe; hence, it would be v-e-ry star-like.

Swami, please! Naturally am I referring to positioning these "cometbusters" (theres no use for them on earth) at least a billion miles away from Earth and not setting them off on earth

We're not responding or transmitting to a planet with 1950s technology but to those with advanced spacetravel capabilities.

Take 15 heavy "cometbusters" (loaded with some 3 tons Lithium deuteride each) and set them off rhythmically in a sequence like so:

.
..
...
....
.....

No alien who detects this will mistake it for a natural phenomenon.

...it would however be like a redneck announcing his moving into the neighborhood by emptying out his shotgun.. A one Gigaton shotgun

"We are here and we want to talk." is the message to their scientists.
"We are here, don't fuck with us." is the message to their millitary.

I'd say its a good messager, but I don't know if we really should advocate our presence already.

But that assumes not only that there is intelligent life outside of earth, which is extremely debatable, but that they'd care enough to notice some abnormal bursts and try to decipher them (which could be very improbable, seeing how biologically different their brains, if they had such an organ, would be).

Trying to contact aliens is like throwing little paper notes into the ocean and hoping it not only gets to another continent, but that someone finds it, deciphers it and actually cares. Even the first step is a major leap, less likely the following ones.

Humans are curious, thats why we have SETI even in the embryonal stages of our space programmes. Its reasonable to assume that those working towards time/spacetravel have an interest in monitoring the sky to see whats out there. That requires intelligence on their part.
On the other hand it is the question if it is useful, given the vasstness of space, to send a signal at a mere 300.000km/sec because it *likely* travels at least hundreds, nay thousands of years before having passed so many stars as to have a statistic probability of finding one with sentient life, if that at all exists.

It's only a 25 billion dollar project though and it puts earth on the galactic map ^_^

Agreed.

There may be intelligent life out there, though I'm not a firm believer in this. If there is, then the best way to find it is not through programs like SETI, but by dominating as much as we can. We need to start colonizing planets and developing technology so if we ever find any intelligent life, we can either enslave them if they benefit us, or kill them off if they don't.

It is not just that SETI has a tiny chance of success; it is that it has ZERO chance of succes even it the universe is highly populated.

It's not *that* expensive

Besides it has revealed several completely unpredicted observations which, although not of sentient origin, are excellent stuff to feed the astronomy nerds with. They look for sentient life but what they pick up are new kinds of energy movements amidst the stars that enhance our knowledge of the Universe.

Zero is a jump, but I'd say the chance of us finding anything through SETI is so infinitesimally small that it's nowhere near worth the cost.

Chances are if aliens have had enoough time to evolve and create technology emanating waves throughout the universe, then they would be using a different medium than the ones for which SETI is looking. Quite obvious, but hope springs eternal.

Swami, your use of absolutisns amazes me.

If some aliens just happened to send out a signal, which travels thousands of years and happens to strike our arial it is asn extremely small probability, but not ZERO. Please admit that!
