How much water/Perlite do I need?
    #4611956 -

It will soon be my 1st attempt at growing shrooms using perlite and although I have been searching the tek section for ages I have been unable to determine just how much perlite and water needs to fit on the bottom. My terranium is only about as big as a small aquarium or a small-average Rubbermaid (22" long by I guess about 10-11" wide and high)

Finally as Iam using an opaque container for stealth how will I know when to add extra water as I guess the perlite layer will be higher than the water added. I will have a humidity gauge inside the terranium so should I just add a little extra water if the humidity drops slightly?

Water at half the depth of the perlite. I recommend 2" of perlite with 1" of water/h2o2 (3%) but you can go a little less. GL

Cool, what ratio of water/h202 should I use?

I use one bottle (pt.) dumped in first then add the water.

So you add the perlite, then 1 pint of h202, then fill up the water to half the perlite level?

I lay my perlite ont he bottomn of my terrarium, then give it a good misting, and it has worked well. Everyone has different ways to do it. you just want to make sure it is moist, but not totally wet.

Thats the biggest point don't saturate your perlite or it will not work. Misting alone is from the top down that is the first to evaporate, by adding water to your perlite the moisture is constantly wicked upwards thru a tremendous amount of surface area more than could ever be had by misting alone. If your area is already humid then misting perlite alone will work but remember mushrooms like a stable environment and I myself like to take a break from as much misting as possible without of course neglecting my kids. yeah, I also add a layer of moist verm under my perlite before misting my perlite layer, so I have plenty of moisture. I also have a cool mist and ultrasonic so i'm not too worried about humidity levels.

But, If I didn't have the coolmist or ultrasonic, I would suggest adding water to the botom like hyphae suggests. hehe The only problem with that, i've noticed, is that new cultivators almost always add too much water wich defeats the purpose.

If you add the correct amount of water, you will have a very nice, consistent RH level.
