Hot Weather Oak Eating Psilocybe
    #4587487 - 08/27/05 03:28 PM (11 years, 11 months ago)

We found what I believe to be hot weather oak eating psilocybes?

I am unaware of such a strain, and we do not have taxonomy to level 6 or advanced/photographic microscopy.

We have never seen or had knowledge of a hot weather oak eater of this species and hope anyone can advise us? Our temperatures have been in the high 80's/ low 90's, though we have had conducive storm weather lately.

Most wood eaters appear at much cooler temperatures???

They look like P. Cubensis to me.

Agreed - definately not a cyan...but they are growing right off of red oak pile of shavings and at this heat. That's what made me curious...

umm that looks like someones outdoor bed. if not then that ground is probably rich with dung. it looks more like rotten grass than "oak shavings". is there any footprints around it that arent from you? if so i would leave it alone, a fellow shroomerite could own it.

Yeah those definitely look like P.Cubensis. The ground is probably saturated in dung. I would go with the possibility that it is someones outdoor patch and not touch it. Either way, cool find! You don't come across cubes very often when you are not intentionally looking for them.

You know as they go on I begin to wonder if they are not "adaptive" as some of them are not producing spores (like a hybrid maybe) but some of them have spored nicely. They are also B-L-U-E almost black blue, and the matter of that we will discover somewhat better soon!
I was just amazed as I was looking for azures or subaers to come up there this christmas, not some mutey-cubey from (?) in the heat of our season...
It coulda been us as we are so much with the jhonny appleseed thing around here. The grass that was piled over them did rot and leave a very thin black layer (very thin -less than .5 cm) - so many things are possible I suppose.
The thing to me is to isolate them on wood with no other opp, and see what comes of it. We will also look at some them on other media too, to see if they seem to exhibit a prefernece....
