The purpose of this thread is to collect data on the growth habits of wild Psilocybe cubensis only. Please copy and paste the data collection questionnaire and fill it in with as much information as possible. If you want to take it a step further and perform analysis on the substrate to test: PH, Nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, and anything else that you would like to include, it will be greatly appreciated. The more data collected, the better the understanding we will have of this wonderful organism in the wild.
Copy and paste the section below:
Date:
Time found: (morning, afternoon, evening, night.)
Temperature: (If temperature is at freezing or below, how many days have temperatures been at or below freezing?)
are temperatures at or above 95°f? (if yes, for how many days or weeks?)
General location: (do not post exact location, nearest town or city)
# of days since last rain: (If recently rained, how many successive days did it rain?):
fog or dew present: ( yes or no):
Humidity: Relative humidity is fine but if possible please use a soil hygrometer with a thermometer to measure water content and substrate temperature. ( Provide as much information as possible)
Substrate: (Cow manure, Horse manure, compost or soil.)
Area found: (Tall grass, open pasture, Short grass, under tree(s) , leaf litter, soil, directly from manure, etc.)
include pictures with data collection sheet.
other: include any other information that you think may be pertinent to the growth of this particular species.

I would suggest looking at data aggregators such as GBIF https://www.gbif.org/species/5242510
or inaturalist https://www.inaturalist.org/guide_taxa/1164339
Cheers, Ob.

humidity levels from a local weather app would suffice, percentages are preferred over a general high or low reference. I will update the sheet.

me either but I did find something online that is Hypomyces cervinigenus collected from "Psilocybe cubensis Alabama" being offered for research purposes.
I'm curious if Alan Rockefeller has seen this before or at least heard of it. This is the first time I have seen Psilocybe cubensis with any type of Parasitic infection.

It's the same Hypomyces that infest lobster mushrooms so I guess it could be but I don't want to try, it's being preserved for the fungarium (herbarium).

I gotcha. Im just curious if itd still be active, or if the Hypomyces deteriorate the active alkoloids. Im sure its still active at this stage. But Im talking about once it fully colonizes it.

I would almost wager that is just cube spores germinating on itself. Ive seen it before with indoor grown cubes

It looks very much like spider web deep between the gills, it reminds me of spider mites. I have the specimen and will see what happens on agar, it very well could be like Bodhisatta said, I listen to him closely when he says something like that, he definitely has proven himself knowledgeable about species.

Cube mycelium has many different morphologies. I had some caps with lots of fuzz. I looked at them under the scope and found clamp connection in the cap fuzz and cube spores too. So just a theory
This is wild though not grown in a tub indoors. But just offering a possibility

As the title states, this is a data collection thread for wild Psilocybe cubensis only! you can start an id report with your own thread, go back to the main mushroom hunting and identification page, look on the right side and you will see "post" click on that to start your ty thread.
With all that said, you have a Coprinellus species, not Psychoactive if that's what you want to know.

Before I enter my data it must be said that this entry is not typical, nor what I intend for this thread, but the past 2 weeks have not been typical in the least. This entry will be a broad coverage of my observations made between 13 Mar to 31 Mar 2020.
Date: 13-31 March 2020
Time found: All observations were made in morning hours. (morning, afternoon, evening, night.)
Temperature: temperature has ranged between 74°f & 90°f with an estimated average of 85°f during the day, temperatures have increased to an average of 90°f between 26 Mar through 31 Mar 2020 (If temperature is at freezing or below, how many days have temperatures been at or below freezing?)
are temperatures at or above 95°f? No (if yes, for how many days or weeks?)
General location: Beulah, Florida, USA (do not post exact location, nearest town or city)
# of days since last rain: No rain between 13 Mar through 30 Mar. (If recently rained, how many successive days did it rain?):
fog or dew present: Yes, dew. ( yes or no):
Humidity: humidity levels have been steady between 60-80% between day and night, with higher humidity levels at night. Relative humidity is fine but if possible please use a soil hygrometer with a thermometer to measure water content and substrate temperature. ( Provide as much information as possible)
Substrate: all finds are in Horse Manure or compost containing horse manure. even the ones pictured with oak leaves are growing in compost. (Cow manure, Horse manure, compost or soil.)
Area found: observations have been in open pasture or medium to tall grass that is not tightly compacted grass but allows airflow and sunlight to reach the ground. (Tall grass, open pasture, Short grass, under tree(s) , leaf litter, soil, directly from manure, etc.)
include pictures with data collection sheet.

other: I must point out that there has been absolutely no rain during the time period of the above observations, this proves that Psilocybe cubensis will fruit without rain. (include any other information that you think may be pertinent to the growth of this particular species.)
Edit: When I mentioned above about growth without rain, this comment is not directed towards the compost mushrooms as much as pasture mushrooms because a large compost pile will retain moisture in greater quantities and longer periods of time than the pasture mushrooms substrate. Observations of Psilocybe cubensis in pastures were made all the way up the 31st of March and only a small amount of rain had fallen on 12 Mar (16th of an inch), check my post before this one to see when the last rain fall took place prior to 12 Mar.

@Cowboycaps thank you for adding the grass species, it seems like I'm seeing a pattern in certain grasses, Bermuda and Bahia seem to the best areas. but I can't prove it, yet! Grasses that do not allow light to reach the ground seem to be the worst and I find that odd because mushrooms do not use light for food .

The temperature of the substrate ranges from 88-98°f, air temperature has been between 75-85°f during the day and dropping to the 55°-60°f at night with humidity in the 18-20% during the day time hours. This has been excellent conditions with the exception of the low humidity for monster cubes on this pile. It has consistently made monsters and I want to know what makes them so big and the potency is out of this world, the best I've ever had comes from here, hose poo compost makes for higher concentration of active indoles in my experience, I would bet that the psilocin content is very high in comparison to the ones that I find in the pastures.

I’ve found the thicker the grass the healthier the field so more mushrooms but I’ve also found them growing by the dozen in thin carpet grass and soil with sparse nutgrass(garbage). As long as the pasture is or has been grazed by a good amount of cattle and the condition are right.
If I were to guess the pasture with soil exposed would do better in the cooler periods and the thicker pasture in warmer.

Ya I’ve noticed that. The nutgrass I mentioned grows in tall clumps it’s a really shitty grass but when the suns out and hot you will find them worked in the clumps.

They do use light to initiate pinning and trekking the mushrooms what direction to grow. They may not feed off light, but they do utalize light.

Date: April 21 2020
Time found: From 8am- 1pm
Temperature: 65-73
are temperatures at or above 95°f? (N/a
General location: Since we are beginning the season I find them in the middle of the field. Never in the woods or wood line. That is summer areas.
# of days since last rain: It rained a lot yesterday everything was soaked
fog or dew present: Some dew early on in my hunt
Humidity: I'm not real sure on the humidity but I will guess about 45-50
Substrate: Mostly cow manure but you can find cubes anywhere near a pasture. And the spores will carry away from the field and in the yard.
Area found: Open pasture, Short grass, directly from manure, all were found in the middle of the field. I wasted my time looking in the woods and tree lines
include pictures with data collection sheet.
This season is just starting to kick off. My favorite time is the beginning of the season because they are all in the field and easy to spot. As it gets hotter they tend to grow in the shady areas.
other: I am always careful and very gently cut my cubies with scissors I take great care and respect my fields.

Appreciate all the info here guys. I’m in Texas near Boerne and have access to a field with lots of cow patties but haven’t been finding anything. The daytime highs have been low 90s and I feel like it’s too dry even after it rains. Anyone had luck in this area and if so win. Most of the successes on this thread seem to be in more humid areas. Would I need to go at sunrise before it gets hot? Anyone tried covering patties after it rains to keep patty humid? I need help and greatly appreciate any advice for south central Texas hunting, thanks.

Maybe it’s because those grasses make them harder too find, lol. I’ve gotta look into how to identify grass species, but often times when I push through a few tall patches of grass, I find some pretty solid mushroom patches hiding in there.

Boerne will probably be too dry to find them easily but you can increase you’re chances if you study and work the fields. Look for a healthy pasture next to a wooded creek or pond with a large cattle herd to increase you’re chances.

Please keep post to data or pertinent information about the growth of the species, this is not a thread for asking questions about finding mushrooms. Any and all irrelevant posts after this warning will be deleted in order to keep the thread on topic and about the growth of wild Psilocybe cubensis. I have no interest in cultivated Psilocybe cubensis, my focus is on wild Ps. cubensis that is not being tended in any way by humans, natural occurrence only.

Date: June 2, 2020
Time found: Evening (morning, afternoon, evening, night.)
Temperature: 80° (If temperature is at freezing or below, how many days have temperatures been at or below freezing?)
are temperatures at or above 95°f? (if yes, for how many days or weeks?)
General location: New Orleans (do not post exact location, nearest town or city)
# of days since last rain: 2 (If recently rained, how many successive days did it rain?):
fog or dew present: negative ( yes or no):
Humidity: 75% Relative humidity is fine but if possible please use a soil hygrometer with a thermometer to measure water content and substrate temperature. ( Provide as much information as possible)
Substrate: Cow that would be not fresh and more set into soil (Cow manure, Horse manure, compost or soil.)
Area found: the grass just seems to grow taller around the mushrooms (Tall grass, open pasture, Short grass, under tree(s) , leaf litter, soil, directly from manure, etc.)
include pictures with data collection sheet.
other: include any other information that you think may be pertinent to the growth of this particular species. The stems on these are crisp and heavy and it is like breaking or biting into a piece of celery.
These mushrooms look like the realest things I have ever seems and makes the environment seem surreal in comparison. The colors of the mushrooms are very bold like a sunset or an artist dipping their brush

Sunday June 7 Late evening New Orleans, LA 78° 99% humidity Days since last rain: 0 Shrooms grew in patches of grass in a cow pasture
Specimens were cut with a small pocket knife right above the scale-like patterns on the stems.
A large Bic cig lighter was used for scale of size.
Other notes: The grass seems to grow taller around these mushrooms.

Just Get The Cheapest Things You Can Find Or Make.
You Could Buy A Temperature Gauge, A Ground Temperature Gauge. You Can Make A Rain Gauge Very Easily, & If You Want To Get Expensive With It, They Make Gauges That Read Damn Near Everything, It Might Even Talk To You

Thank you very much to everyone contributing to this thread, great work
Due to some of my immediate family having life threatening health issues at the moment, I have not had much time to hunt like I would normally.
Look forward to seeing more contributions from outside the U.S. to have a wider variety of data, So far. we have 1 from Australia and 1 from Peru,
thank you again to everyone contributing, every post helps, hope to see this still going 10 yrs down the road. At the end of year I will share the compiled data.

Those are some nice looking p. cubensis, Doc. I made a find on Tuesday night where I found 51 grams of p. cubensis and one of them is a small mature cube that has a blackened cap (image 6)and is slightly dried. While some are dry others are very fresh standing right next to them.
Tuesday Night, December 8, 2020
I didn’t record temperature or humidity but I estimate a cold 52° F and 70-80% humidity
Ranges from 7 PM- 8:24PM
This was a clear night after that sunny day or two ago Dew was present as if it had rained
Growing 2 hours from New Orleans/Metairie area behind old cow field
5 days since rain and there was a very sunny day before I found these. I found this important that there is a sunny day after the heavy rains to restart the growth cycle or reboot
The first shroom was found alone and then a few ground were present deeper into the section These p. cubensis have various shapes from short and round to tall and shapely. Some of the stipe are bulky. Shapely in pic 11 So dense pins in pic 12
Image 23 (10:10PM) is a harvest shot of p. cubensis from image 3 (7PM) I called this one my crystal cube because the cap was shiny like it had crystals inside and the bruise on the cap was glowing In picture 4 I was pretty proud of this cube because of the bulky stipe . This one looks like a bodybuilder . I also just added image 19 is a close up of the same juiced up shroom from image 4. The purple spores are also noticeable on the stipe as well as black spores too
image 4 has a strong stipe This has a dark cap in image 6 Shapely stipe in pic 11 image 19 is a strong cube
image 23 has a crystal like appearance
That’s all with exception of retakes and more group harvest photos

Those aren’t cubes and are nonactive. This thread is only for Psilocybe Cubensis, and if you just have a question on what your mushrooms are (I.e. you are not certain what species), then you should make your own thread with an I.D. Request as the subject. Because this thread is only for data collection and no i.d. requests. I’m not sure what those are, but I know they don’t look like a known active

There seems to be a lot of variables that are often left unexposed on most research sites that may be highlighted more clearly on this thread.

are temperatures at or above 95°f? During day not quite, in the evening when found no
General location: SE QLD
# of days since last rain: 2
fog or dew present: ( yes or no): No

Substrate: Cow manure
Area found: open pasture, some undertrees mixture of tall and long grass I think grass species is Kikuyu

I'm wondering which conditions to look for for fruiting in Georgia. In an area in the west of the state and below i20. How old should the manure be? They've been pooping in the pasture since the beginning of the year. Also. Having a couple of cows and knowing which conditions are favorable, how can I increase the chances? Feed them spores? I am the type to hope that it happens naturally but if it doesn't after a while....
If this is the wrong thread to ask these questions please point me in the right direction. I hope to contribute to this study.

Late winter is the dead end of the season which renews in the beginning of May and starts to flourish by June Nutrients are good feed the cows enriched feed and grain . The fresh is a mess much more preferable to age into maturity where the shrooms deep rooted The shrooms stand up in the wet where the humidity reaches %100 and dew forms on the caps keeping the gills warm underneath usually temperatures from 78 to 110° Near water near shade in the edge of sources of sunlight as well

7:09PM-7:46PM May 18, 2021 72° 91% humidity Found in or behind pasture for cows Lots of rain for 2 days including this morning No considerable fog this evening but there was a mist and remaining rain water There was a certain oddity as I found several specimens that had a doubled stipe connecting at the cap. Growing in grass up to 6 inches tall I had to press down on the grass or cut the grass with my knife to get some decent photos of the stipe In Louisiana. Spores are purple to black

Examples of a double stipe:

Date: Sunday, May 23rd, 2021
Time found: Morning 6 - 8:00am
Temperature: 74°f At Time Found. High 79°f, Low 73°f
are temperatures at or above 95°f? No
General location: South Tx (Houston Area)
# of days since last rain: Has Been Raining Heavy On & Off For About 7 Days Now, We've Received Well Over 6 Inches Of Rainfall
fog or dew present: No Fog, Dew Was Present
Humidity: 82% At Time Found, Hovers Around 80-90% Through Out The Day
Substrate: Cow Manure/Manure Enriched Hay Piles
Area found: Most Are Fruiting In The Hay Piles At The Moment

I'm Going To Add On Some Pics From Earlier This Week As Well, Just So They'll Be In The Thread

other: I've Noticed That Year After Year, The Meatier Species Of Mushrooms Don't Start Fruiting Until May, Once Multiple Rains Have Started To Get Things Going. Parasols, Coprinus, Inkys, Psathyrellas, & Panaeolus Will Fruit Earlier In The Year, But The Psilocybe's, Stropharia's & Agaricus Sp Don't Start Fruiting Until May, & Then Things Really Get Going In June/July/August & September.
I've Only Found 3 Cubes Out Of Season. 2 In February 2019 & 1 In December Of 2019. It Is A Very Rare Find For Me. I Believe They Can Fruit Year Round, But Only A Good Year.
It Seems The Mycelium Of The Meatier Mushrooms Needs More Water Content To Start Thriving Before It Will Send Out Fruits. Which Makes Sense. Then, Once The Mycelium Is Strong, Has Plenty Of Water & Nutrients, It Will Continue To Send Out Fruits Many Days After The Rain Has Stopped.

Great thread!
I'm fairly new to shroomery, though not new to mycology so please forgive (and correct) me if i'm out of bounds.
I've been looking for a nice wild print for a while but haven't felt comfortable asking anyone directly for one.
Any chance of someone here being able to help a fellow researcher in need? If not, a gentle nudge in the right direction would be most appreciated!
Brightest Blessings.

Its only illegal if you get caught😂
But thats most for spore vendors though.. they wont. But some people that pick wild ones might.

It's been 20+ years since I hunted, in South Florida. This is all spot on to what my conditions were. I'd drive 20 minutes into the 'glades.
A day or two past the rains either horse pasture or cow pasture. Always checked taller grass. Preferred horse to cow, smell wise

I've wanted to post the data for the two cubes I've found so far this season. I wasn't very good about getting around to that... I'm curious though as to what are the ideal fruiting conditions in west central Georgia. Apparently I'm wrong to what I think would be ideal. Both of the times I've found them they have been solo, no rain for a few days, temps in the 80s, in an area that is mostly in the sun, and practically the only type of fruiting body in the pasture. In between these finds where there was nearly daily rainfall I've found panaeolus cyanescens exclusively. Cows have only been here since December.

Date: 13th November
Time found: around noon after over a week of rainy humid days
Temperature: Celsius daytime temps mid 20's up to 27, night time around 10
Are temperatures at or above 95°f?: No
General location: Latitude 26" sub tropical coastal, cow pasture.
# of days since last rain: Had a wet humid week leading up to finding, rained and stormed daily. Normally it's dry around here this early on in summer, this much rain and humidity for over a week was a surprise.
Fog or dew present: yes it's been wet
Humidity: a wet week previous.
Substrate: cow pasture in broken down cow manure
Area found: in short grass.
Other: Was thinking it's been wet enough for shrooms and a friend found these unexpectedly looking along a fence line.
The top ones look like they flushed at the very start of the wet week as they are opened and sun dried. The fresher ones have some unopened veils.

See if you also observe this: As temperatures drop, fruits become smaller in stature and hug the substrate more, but fruit potency increases

Hi Doc, in regards potency. One of the first things I did when I started growing cubensis indoors was to make an outdoor patch for the expected failures being a new grower.
When temperatures got a bit hot in summer a few trays of spawn went bad so they were put outside in the failure patch and covered with wet hessian/burlap. A week to 10 days or so later some cubes popped up.
I'd come home from work and water them late afternoon and put the sack back over them, then take the sack off first thing in the morning so they'd get some sun. I was able to do this for between 2-3 weeks, and whilst they never got much bigger they maintained and didn't shrivel up or turn the caps up.
When I thought they had peaked in size I tried the biggest one, the shroom in my avatar. When it was chopped up to make tea I noticed how thick the stem was, really chunky, you can see a cut portion of the stem in the saucepan on the stove.
That shroom kicked my arse. I was fully blinked out for almost an hour and either side of blinking out was in all sorts of discombobulation. It was waaaaaay stronger than any indoor cubensis I've cultivated.
I had a few people say no way could it be any stronger but I do not agree with that view at all lol. Just thought I'd mention that seeing as you were asking about potency.
Cheers.

I've noticed (from my experience) that wild fruits found in the colder months at the end of the main season here in Texas, don't bruise as much as spring/Summer fruits.

MpSeph, that is an interesting observation. Are these cowpie shrooms or ?
I don't see as many cubensis in Horse manure out in the pasture during winter months, but horse manure doesn't stay together as long as cow poo and doesn't seem to retain moisture as long, so Ive found more in the rainy season that grew strictly from Horse poo
Cow manure, this is a much better guarantee to find fruits than horse pastures. Other than the horse poo substrate, cow manure produces bigger flushes and fruit, but horse poo compost, because of it's size will produce massive flushes of monster fruits.
I have seen people say substrate doesn't affect potency, but I have had the opposite experience. The most potent, ass kicking cubes that I've ever had, came from horse poo compost that came from cleaning out the stalls. However, I have to say that this is subjective and anecdotal at best and based on the experiences of myself and my fellow travelers.

I find that winter shrooms are more compact and heavier for their size. Weight can vary in the cold weather in a way that is not dependent of height. And potency is more relevant to weight than volume

I think I understand you, but I I'm not sure that potency has anything to do with this, because in my experience, cubensis that grow in cold weather delay spore production and my opinion is that it the reason for potency discrepancies between warm and cold weather cubensis. I'm really hoping that the quantitative/qualitative testing becomes widely available soon, so I can have some evidence to back up my hypothesis.

Date: Dec 1-6 2021
Time found: Late morning - midday.
Temperature: Temperature ranging from high 30s-60s at night and 50s-high 70s during the day.
are temperatures at or above 95°f? No.
General location: East Texas
# of days since last rain: Two light rains totaling ~.5” with precipitation before very low.
fog or dew present: Early morning but gone by midday.
Humidity: 30-100% Hunting the morning after a light rain has provided the most fruits.

This was the smallest I found but only pictures I took. Three other larger mushrooms which dries to 6.5grams were also found. I’ll update with more photos as next pins mature.
other: Has been a particularly warm and dry fall this year although some cubensis were found the day following a 37° night with no noticeable damage.

Yes, they are fruits from cow manure. I don't know why, but in the colder months, they don't show near as much bruising

12PM
74 degrees F
(Less than 95F)
Found in Central Florida.
It rained ~2 days ago.
There was fog & dew this morning.
RH was only 31% when found.
Found growing directly from cow dung in a pasture.

I think it’s *too* wet now. Most of the field is flooded, & these specimens from a cow patty deposited on a large clump of perennial grass (above ground level) were the only ones found.

Temperature: Cooler evening (60s from the rain) leading into a day in the 80s (If temperature is at freezing or below, how many days have temperatures been at or below freezing?)
are temperatures at or above 95°f?: no high temps for a few days (if yes, for how many days or weeks?)
General location: NE FL, cattle country (do not post exact location, nearest town or city)
# of days since last rain: light showers throughout week, heavy rain previous day (If recently rained, how many successive days did it rain?):
fog or dew present: dewy as a decimal ( yes or no):
Humidity: Relatively high, rapidly dropping Relative humidity is fine but if possible please use a soil hygrometer with a thermometer to measure water content and substrate temperature. ( Provide as much information as possible)
Substrate: Cow patties, mostly 3-6 months old (Cow manure, Horse manure, compost or soil.)
Area found: open pasture, shaded areas of trees, wetter areas more fruitful (Tall grass, open pasture, Short grass, under tree(s) , leaf litter, soil, directly from manure, etc.)
include pictures with data collection sheet. Regular cubies, nothing special except maybe a 50g wet anamoly
other: donkeys eat shrooms, no apparent effects haha include any other information that you think may be pertinent to the growth of this particular species.

Date: April 25th
Time found: afternoon, smallish in size
Temperature: warmish 25C
are temperatures at or above 95°f? April is autumn in Australia all under 86F
General location: Beaudesert
# of days since last rain: 4 days
fog or dew present: none
Humidity: Assume in the 70s or less
Substrate: cow manure Area found: short grass chance siting roadside
Other notes of interest. One of the wettest summers here in SE QLD Australia. The lack of fungi, was rather a shock, and initial thoughts - the drought we had could have affected the fungi. In this case with the paddock where we usually go, being void of fungi apart from a few large (blue meanie look alikes). Recent excitement of seeing shrooms on the footpath, did not have any actives at the field. I assume rainfall alone can no longer be a factor to mean there will be fungi in the fields. Its rather confusing

That could be it also, or maybe lack of sun, has been more cloudy than sunny. I have seen cubes (only small) in may in the mountains at 15c, but sadly that paddock is now sold and i assume someone will build on it. See what the rain brings in the coming days

Time found: afternoon
Temperature: Had a week of mid to high 20'C
are temperatures at or above 95°f? No
General location: 25' Latitude. Wide Bay Aus
# of days since last rain: had a week of light rain, but it's been a wet and humid summer so far. These were picked first dry day
fog or dew present: no
Humidity: above 70% all week
Substrate: Cow manure
Area found: open pasture, short grass)
Had to find a new spot as the last spot was ploughed up. Knew the conditions were right, jumped the fence across the road from where I usually go and found cubes. Some of these must've been out for quite a few days as they had dropped spores. Just managed to finish this post as the effects were starting to come on
