Re: Psilocybe azurescens [Re: Fugazi92]

Introduced means that a friend of Paul stamets took some alder chips and mycelia to his back yard in Wisconsin, Ohio, Arizona, New york and a few other midwestern h towns in Ohio. Shrooms grew for a few years and whent he patches were not refertiized with new mulch and woodchips the shrooms did not return and they also did not spread.

This is commonin European patches in Germany, France, Irtaly and Switzerland and Holland where people have tried to produc e outdoor patches of P. azurescens,. They do not spread to other surrounding areas. Introduced w means one or two years and then they are gone.

mj

THey are primaro ily indigenous to hammond and AStoria, Oregon, sometimes up and down the Oregon coast, , yet rare in those other areas of Oregon coast but also sometimes int he Seattle area in transplanted gardens, but then again for a few years and they disappear.

"Textuality"
Scroll down the pdf for some textual evidence.

Look for the word Kentucky.

The amazing thing is that they've found them growing on something other than hardwood. I'd love for Mushroom John to step in here and fill in the details about the (singular I believe) find in KY of Psilocybe cyanescens. It's quite a good story with a neat theory or two about why they were there. Don't know where else to point you for the info but it's been posted numerous times over the years. If Allen and Guzman's words aren't good enough, who's are?
Like I said, it's a good story and I hope John posts it, I'm done providing links.

Have you even read this thread? What you say is true, however so is what I said. Saying different isn't calling me a liar lol. It'd be calling the experts liars. That's the really funny part.

No one said there were mountains of them in KY. But it IS a fact that cyan was found there. I have nothing to gain by making this up. This is the last time I try to help someone here though.

the point is that they are not found there naturally, and they do not spread and/or re-occur.

and nobody is calling you or the experts liars. and nothing about it is funny.

also if you feel the need to not try and help anyone because your veiws or interpretations of others veiws might be challanged openly in public discussion, then youre taking a defeatest position. and i see no evidance to beleive you have been in any way 'defeated' i hope you will reconsider.

Oosi, P. cyanescens grows in the UK where it was first recorded from and throughout most of Europe , the Baltic states and Russia and China.

The Article on Psilocybe cyanecens comes from:

Guzm?n, Gast?n. 1999. New species and new records of Psilocybe from Spain, the U. S. A., and Mexico, and a new case of intoxication by Psilocybe barrerae. Doc. Mycol. vol. 114.
Quote:
Psilocybe hispanica from Spain, Psilocybe oregonensis from the U. S. A. and Psilocybe jaliscana, Psilocybe pegleriana and Psilocybe pseudozapotecorum from Mexico are described as new species. Psilocybe semilanceata is reported from a new locality in Spain, Psilocybe cyanescens is reported from the Eastern U, S. A. (in Kentucky) and Psilocybe bulbosa from a new locality in Mexico. Also discussed is an accidental intoxication of Psilocybe barrerae.

.
Sorry I do not have a copy of the document but it is published.

They are a cold weather mushroom so it is possible that some may be found in small quantities int he short fall to freeze peroiod.
But as Mitchnast and I and other said, Introduced shrooms do not spread to other areas when transpanted.

Yes, in a patch that someone cultivated. They weren't found in numerous locations. I could just as easily get some cyan mycelium going in a bed of woodchips in georgia and make false claims that they've "been found in Georgia!"

Fact of the matter is, they don't occur there naturally. It was and isolated event that only occured because someone introduced them.

If you're still claiming that they still grow there, show me some pictures.

i as referring to US. I got a pic of a cyan fairy ring from UK i thought it was introduced though cause theres processed woodchips in the middle of a grassy area, so i assumed they didnt naturally occur. I heard they grow in Germany too.But in America the only places you can 'really' expect to find them from are Oregon and Washington in US of A, from what ive heard.

Yeah introduced patches of azures are exhausted in a year or two, that include cyans or does it just apply to any woodlover? Also if the patch is exuasted and you add wood say 3 years after its gone will the myc start to colonize the other chips and fruit or will it be dead.

and hangnail, they might of been found in KY, but what im saying is that was just a rare occurance and you shouldnt expect to find em there.

P. cyanescens was first oi identified from Surrey in the Kew Gardens in `1945 by Alexandria Wakefield.

They grow in most northern temperate climates from Russia china tot he baltic states to Germany some parts of Scandinavia and Holand and most of EUK and Europe and northern Africa.

And they grow profusely in British Columbia.

Until someone reads the Guzman paper, no one will know itf it was an isolated gropup or an introduced group.

mj

I will ask for this paper from him to see what it says. I have about 90 percent of his works including his non-active species papers

I see no pictures or links to prove your assertion.  Why is the burden of proof on me?  I said "found" and they were.  I also said "single instance" meaning only once.  I also said it didn't make sense and shouldn't be in the FAQ.  You show me where I said "they grow wild" or "they will spread".  Fact is I didn't.
I said your misleading document could lead people to believe they would and when MJ said this wasn't the case (the first time)  I was satisfied that they wouldn't.  Never maintained otherwise since then.  But considering the wide range of these mushrooms, I wouldn't rule it out offhand.

In the instance that I was referring to, one was found growing ON a pinecone.  Several theories were projected including one about them being the by-product of a cultivated patch.

OOISI:  My tone was out of line.  There was nothing harsh about what you said but I reacted that way.  Sorry.  And I agree with your assertion that it is probably isolated.

True, the flavor isn't funny around here.  More like sarcastically condescending with a pinch of hostility.  You, MJ and a few others are the exception.

On the defeatest thing; I didn't come here to compete so it would be impossible to be defeated. Didn't come here to argue either, only repeated verbatim what was posted elsewhere.  As stated earlier, I was telling the guy (in a nicer way than others had) he probably wouldn't find them even though it's in the faq.  At the same time showing others why he thought he might.

Just like cubensis didn't proliferate when cattle were imported?

Again my arguement was never "they grow wild" or "they spread" but that the faq could lead one to believe they did.  Especially since people are told to read it instead of being given an answer.  Someone does and takes it seriously then it takes 25 posts before he gets any help.

"Just like cubensis didn't proliferate when cattle were imported?"

nope, not like that, in that case they are not cultivated. they still do not re-occur, but it is a different paradigm that can occur naturally through long-distance migration of heards.

the only difference really is that such a spread is unintentional. whereas the subject of this thread was very much so. which basically is the entire point so accidental introduction as a benign parasite can't really compair.

in my oppinion however, i beleive the term "introduced" should really only apply to species that become established, for example, the rainbow trout was introduced to many rivers in canada and has become successful, or the rabbit was introduced to austrailia and has become a pest.

these examples show a species that you can find there at anytime, these are examples of introduced species that will still be locally abundant for years to come. whereas the mushroom speceis in question is incapable of thriving in the habitat in which it was introduced, and therefore has certainly already died out. concordantly, its designation as an introduced species has expired.

in conclusion, psilocybe azureasens is not an introduced species to wisconson. though once it could be considered as such by someone who did not take into account that it was under controlled conditions and although outside, was limited by a biological containment structure of unfavorable habitat, we must assume the data is outdated based on the chronically-stable information already accumulated on the environmental needs for this species to proliferate. unless it can be proven genetically that another generation of the species from the same strain can still be found in the area of course, outside of the original source growth, but it's just not going to happen.

by this merrit i declare that it is safe to call the information inacurate in terms.

dispite it's growth, having known the source, the author should not have published it so.
