How fast is your internet connection?
    #4564167 -

Highest I've ever seen mine top out at (although only for a few seconds) was maybe 5.9mb per second

My connection is Bell Ultra Highspeed DSL line

I get 9mb down on speed tests , fastest download speed I have actually seen is about 8 Mb/s. My upload speed is 1.5mb on speed tests and I can't exceed 100 Kb/s on Bittorrent or my download speed will start to suffer. If I'm just seeding I can upload at 150+ Kb/s.

I'm on road runner and no , those aren't the speeds you're supposed to get  I modified my cable modem configuration file to get those speeds , you're supposed to be limited to 6mb down and 45 Kb/s upload. Bright House is stingy with the upload speed

Wait wait wait, you can modify modems to 'unlock' higher speeds?  I thought this was controlled on the server end.

Any links?

I have 3 MB DSL.

I just have the regular Bell Sympatico DSL service.

I get 2.6mbps down and 600kbps up.

It only works for Motorola Surfboards , I use the 4200. It involves booting over ethernet and loading an modified firmware image on the modem.

I got lucky and the modem I bought from eghey had an older firmware revision , Motorola got wise to this and started disabling the etherboot in later firmware versions which means you would need to build a serial cable and connect it directly to the circuit board in order to load the modified firmware.

After that it's as simple as telling the modem to download a different configuration file from the ISP's TFTP server. I found a config file that is meant for the road runner techs to test line speed with. The hacked firmware also gives you the ability to change the modems HFC Mac address , which means you can clone a modem from a different node and not even pay for service. A buddy of mine a few miles away pays for road runner and he let me sniff out mac addresses on his node for me to use.

Check out www.fibercoax.net , there's a wealth of information there and the forum members aren't rude to Noob questions like some sites.

I doubt you'll be able to "unlock" your DSL because, as far as I know, none of the DSL companies put limits on their lines.

The reason cable companies put caps on their modems is because the network is shared among a whole group of customers in a particular area. Everyone who's plugged into the same cable circuit has to share their bandwidth with eachother. So to stop one or two people from hogging all the bandwidth...they put caps on the speeds.

DSL is a direct line from your home to the gateway. You don't share your bandwidth with anyone, so there's no need to cap your speeds. DSL lines are, by nature, slower than cable lines so most companies I have looked at would never cap their speeds - they want their customers to get the fastes speeds possible.

So for most people with DSL your speeds are physical limitations, not "settings" which you can change.

For instance my line is advertised as 3 Mbps, but I only get 2.6 Mbps because of my distance from the central office where the gateway is located. With DSL lines, the longer the line is the slower the speeds will be.

How much is bell sympatico DSL? I don't have internet at home at the moment and am thinking about finally getting it hooked up for good there. Is there a package deal with your regular phone line? Cable option is out because the cable is split all through the house.

I think it's like $40 a month or so if you just get DSL by itself, or $35 if you get a 12-month contract. I don't know what the package deals go for, but I'm sure they have them.

I suggest you try http://www.canadianisp.com/ and locate a company that uses the exact same Bell lines as........well bell, but are cheaper.
Bell is a huge monopoly and they will rip you off.

I use Csolve.net simply because you have UNLIMITED throughput per month!  http://www.csolve.net/services/resid_dsl.html

I get the same, 3MB DSL line as sympatico, at $32 (includes tax).

I used to be with www.ontariodsl.ca but they have caps on their downloads.  Comes out to $28 for 10 GB, and $30 + tax for 20 GB.
I noticed OntDSL has better pings than my Csolve tho.  Also Csolve has better phone support.

Both companies are great tho and i recommend them both to anyone in the toronto/ontario region.

If you're a gamer and dont download a lot, OntDSL all the way.  If you're a DVD rip freak, Csolve is better.
