Two computers on one internet connection

I have a new roommate that has his own computer and I need advice on how to set up both on my cable connection. Do I just need a router? Will this allow both computers to be used at the same time? Will they share the same IP#? Any advice is appreciated, thanks.

Yes you need a router.
Each of your comps will have an ip on the LAN(local area network) and your router will have an ip on the WAN(Wide are network)
Just as with all electronics, the cheapest place to get on is on ebay

You don't need a router, just stick another network card in your machine and hook it up to his machine, and enable internet connection sharing (then your machine is the router)

yeah you must have a router. for 1 connection shareing requires windows secound it requires a computer to always be on. you can get a good router for the price of a good network card might wanna try newegg.com or a local store like bestbuy. they are easy to use and cheap. but you may have to clone your PC's mac or register your routers mac with your ISP

Some router setups will give you two different IP addresses. In my current network, there is an external IP, and there are internal IP addresses. I cannot find the resource where I am recalling this information from but I will do my best to describe it. On the outside of the router, there is the modem, and this connection has it's own specific IP address. Within the network, each computer has it's own separate IP address.

With a router you can use NAT (network address translation).
Internal IPs will start with 10.0.0.* or 192.168.0.*. The router will keep track of connections and route the packets to the correct internal IP.
The cheapest is for you to buy another NIC and use Internet Connection Sharing (Win98 or newer), but then the machine acting as as a router (the one with 2 network cards) will have to be turned on for the other computer to access the Internet.
Alternatively you can buy a router-box (I guess they're around $50-60), or use an old 386 or newer with 2 networks cards and a linux firewall distro (e.g. IPCop).
I use a P133/32MB/1.6GB with IP-cop as a home-network router/firewall.

You can hook up a router then call your ISP to see if they will lease you another IP. If you are both gamers and both play alot at the same time. It should be around $10 extra a month. If you aren't really gamers then just go with a router. Dont get a hub by the way.
