PHISH PHANS
    #4577939 - 08/25/05 08:17 AM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Who here is into Phish? This band changed by life and it was extremely saddening to see them break up. I've only been to two shows, one being Coventry and both being amazing experiences. You guys think they'll ever get back together? I saw Trey playing at Bonnaroo and was extremely dissappointed. All I was thinking was "how could you guys break up!?"

I hate their music, but would be interested to hear some of their covers of say the Velvet Underound. They soiled a nirvana tune once. The things I do like about Phish is how they never played the same set twice and thus making bootlegs and going to see them multiple nights worth it. Also they don't advertise which is pretty cool.

They are pretty good from what I've heard of them, that being Junta and a Picture of Nectar.

I love phish. i was pretty bummed when they called it quits, since i've only been to three shows.

It was such an unreal experience going to phish shows, but now I realize that the experience is still available to be had at concerts by other bands that are just as good.

okay, almost as good

They are my favorite band, I didn't get to see them enough though, only 3 shows and Coventry. If I would have been old enough to drive around the country when I first got into them, I would have easily hit up all the summer shows. I dig Trey's new stuff with 70vp, but the Bonnaroo show sucked, confirmed. Saw him at 10K and at Red Rocks and they are getting better. The RR show kicked ass, and they were filmming it for a DVD, so you'll probably be able to see it sooner or later. I really don't think they will ever get back together and play as Phish, but it would be impossible for those guys NOT to play together on stage at some point.

I  Phish a whole lot.  Only got to see six shows, during the last two runs, but it was still fucking amazing.

i saw them a few times. its amazing how a band can be so good live, yet suck so much on their albums. i never really concider myself a phish fan, but i can respect what they were doing. medeski, martin, and wood were more my vein (especially the album ShackMan)

I'm big into phish and have a pretty large collection of albums and live shows, but I never got to see them live before they broke up except vicariously through this movie theater boradcast they did last year. I had a dream a few weeks ago that they hired me on as a second guitar player but I was late for the show and Mike was angry.

Lately I've been listening to a bunch of their live stuff from 97-99. It's mind blowing. Trey Anastasio's solo stuff is pretty kickass too. More refined, but I really dig it. I miss Phish but I would jump at the chance to see Trey. Even if it involved Dave Matthews.

As for their albums, personally I think Billy Breathes, Story of the Ghost and Farmhouse are all amazing records. Seriously, listen to them, esp. Billy Breathes and Farmhouse. Some people complain Phish's live show didn't translate into their albums, but sometimes I wish their albums translated better into their shows. It's like a totally different vibe. But after listening to a 93' rendition of Esther I realized why so many good album tracks don't get played live, if they are too good from start to finish there is no where to put the jam! They couldn't play their best songs live because they were too complete, with no room for experimenting.

Yea, I really think that Billy Breathes, Farmhouse and Rift are a few of my favorite studio albums. Here's a few random pictures from my stash....

I like the first 5 songs of Rift ALOT, but after that it kind of loses energy for me. Silent in The Morning is cool though.

phish rock. i never saw them pre-hiatus, but saw them half a dozen times or so after. i wish i could have seen them in the late 80s-95 or so - i've got a cousin who was a huge phan during that time and probably has seen them a hundred times, easily. now she's a research biologist or something like that - further proof that massive consumption of lsd doesn't necessarily fry your brain!

i would say, though, that i almost never listen to their studio stuff - i really only like story of the ghost, junta and picture of nectar, and they all pale in comparison to anything from the archives.

I think alot of people don't really give their studio albums much patience because they've heard Phish is a live band. The thing I really like about the studio albums (the later ones anyway) is that they each have a very developed vibe. Billy Breathes breathes and sways, STOTG has that funky groove and twist thing going on while Farmhouse is really floaty like flying through the air. Each record really takes you to it's own special place.

The studio albums are as much a journey as live shows but they are more understated. However they have MUCH better continuity. You aren't going to hear a silly Suzy Greenberg after a beautiful Tweezer or Reba jam. That's the thing that pisses me off the most about live Phish, the sets can be way too eclectic. The albums are not and they flow much better.

My thoughts.
