Live is by far the best way to experience Phish, but if you can't do that, go for one of their live albums; A Live One, Slip, Stitch & Pass, and Hampton Comes Alive. In addition to all of their albums, I've begun acquiring a number of their concerts taped by fans. The best quote I've read concerning Phish is 'The lure of Phish is the promise of a transcendental experience. The hook comes when it actually happens.' I don't remember which mag I read that in.------------------ I missed the boat once when I was young and stupid, but now I am able to miss the boat repeatedly with great skill and accuracy.

Phish reminds me of kittens playing with a ball of yarn. Except their paws are their instruments, and the yarn is our soul. Yeah, cheesy metaphor, I know. But that's what it feels like. Their music just bat's around emotion. Toying with joy. And it's so psychedelic. I love that quote Gaijin. "Relax, the world will spin, beside itself and suck you in, with threats and hopes beyond compare" -Franky Says - Story of the Ghost - Phish My recommendation for the first Phish album to buy is Junta. It's their first release, and very trippy. You almost don't need drugs, it takes you on a trip itself. And I certainly can't disagree with Bea's recommendations on MP3s to try. Remember to try not to take them too seriously. Their not like Floyd where they set out to make an incredible experience, they just play(in both senses of the term). And it just happens. Especially with the lyrics, a lot of the lyrics are just meaningless. "The telephone was ringing, So I handed to Liz. She said, 'This isn't who it would be, if it wasn't who it is.'" -Wolfman's Brother - Hoist - Phish Well, I should really stop procrastinating and read my Chem book. Heh, that's really the only reason why this post is so long. Perhaps I'll listen to Junta too. Peace. -Hatta

Speaking of Junta, 'Esther' is a lovely trip song. I kinda feel like I ride through the clouds with her...but I stay behind when she dies in the lake.------------------ I missed the boat once when I was young and stupid, but now I am able to miss the boat repeatedly with great skill and accuracy.

Well, one of the Big reasons Phish is so popular is they aren't much different than The Grateful Dead. Letting people set up MICs at shows to record them, wearing Tie Dye clothes and shit. Playing several songs end to end, like they don't even stop. Besides, Phish got really popular after Jerry Garcia passed away. Where do you think all those Dead HEads went? ------------------ AND WHEN YOUR FINGERS FIND HER SHE DROWNS YOU IN HER BODY CARVING DEEPER RIPPLES IN THE TISSUES OF YOUR MIND Erick Clapton Ginger Baker Jack Bruce -=CREAM=-

I, personally, like Phish not particularly because of their type of music (although the vocal jam on "A Live One" put a smile on my face), but because of the intelligence behind it. I find numerous chord progressions that are exactly (emphasis on "exactly") the same as those of certain classical pieces. "Bathtub Gin" has a bit in it where the progression is taken directly from one of Offenbach's stylings. Phish knows what can be psychedelic, enjoyable, and highly regarded all at the same time without being corny. They create things that I've never heard before; they can, quite literally, "talk" to the audience using their instruments. I look up to those guys like none other. I can't even begin...

Hello 13 Black Rainbows, the band is always on tour. Seeing them in concert is the best way of understanding their message. Live recordings cannot capture what your ears and eyes can in the moment of a live jam session.pphhaayyiisshh

Pat, I don't think it's accurate at all to say Phish isn't much different than the Dead. The community around the bands may be very similar, but the bands themselves and their music are worlds apart.------------------ I missed the boat once when I was young and stupid, but now I am able to miss the boat repeatedly with great skill and accuracy.
