cultivation of a woodlover classified as.... other
    #4576002 - 08/24/05 06:28 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

i have a wild sporeprint of a previously uncultivated woodlover (as far as i can tell). The name of the strain is Psilocybe Caerulipes. I was wanting to try to cultivte this mushroom indoors. Where should i start? i was thinking of making a liquid culture and then introducing that to some WBS, then spawning to some poplar planer chips.
should i try to start with agar since its a wild print (and may contain contams.) if so, what are some good substitutes for agar plates. i've never done agar and if that is what i should do, somebody should point me in the right direction.
has anybody ever heard of attempts at psylocybe caerulipes cultivation?
if i can get a few jars of grain going, i might try and do grain to grain transfers until i have a bunch of spawn that i might put in an outdoor bed. p caerulipes season is in the late spring/early summer in my area, would it be a good idea to start an outdoor bed before winter and hope for fruits next spring?
somebody give me some insight...
i've never done woodlovers before, should i try something thats been done before before i launch into an uncultivates species?
am i totally insane?

thanks all

guaranteed failure, you need to start with agar to clean up the print, it's wild so it wont be sterile. after you've dont that you can spawn it to grains but you may also want to try spawning it to wood chips

neither of these links help... i've read all of that already... i think i know what do do once i have my spawn ready, but i dont know what to do up until then... i know what agar is and i have never used it, but i dont ahve any plates... is there a good substitute for these? what about pouring agar in the bottom of 1/2 pint jars?
would this work?

baby food jars you say? i figure i can get agar from the international food store a few miles away... i just boil it down and pour a little layer into the bottom of the baby food jar, allow it to solidify, then add a few drops of spore solution? what do i do if contams get on my agar plate?

thats why I posted the link to the agar info in the FAQ, it can answer most of
your questions, some it may not are things like 'spore solution' a wild print
should not be in a solution, it should be in print form, in a solution I'll
guarantee that you'll be dealing with even more contams than in print form

If you don't want to use petri dishes...use widemouth 1/2 pint jars.

One small drop of spore solution or just scrape some spores onto the agar...and move them around a little...in a Z pattern.

I do alot of agar work with Wild prints...

You will need to make some MEA or PDYA...I always use some Media Antibiotic with Wild prints.

You can get some Media Antibiotic at Sporeworks...

http://sporeworks.com/xcart/catalog/Media-Antibiotic-p-16221.html

here are some agar recipes for you...

I follow pretty much the same recipies as are stated in the FAQ.

Copy and Pasted from the FAQ :

Quote:

These recipes are designed for agar maintenance of Psilocybe species. All media have a near-neutral pH and should be sterilized for twenty to thirty minutes at 15 psi pressure. 500 ml of medium will pour around 20 petri dishes. Using a different medium from time to time will prevent the culture getting used to one medium.

Malt Extract Agar (MEA)
10 grams light malt extract
9 grams agar agar
500 ml potable or distilled water

Potato Dextrose (Yeast-extract) Agar (PD(Y)A)
broth from boiling 150 grams sliced potatoes
in 500ml water for 30 minutes(add water to 500ml)
(You can use 5 g of instant potato flakes instead)
9 g agar agar
7 grams dextrose( = glucose, or 10 ml honey or corn syrup )
1 gram brewers yeast or yeast-extract (optional)

If you read the PDYA one there are several different ways you can make it.

This is the one I make.

-PDYA-
500ml water
5 grams of instant potato flakes(Potato Buds Brand)
9 grams agar agar
10 ml honey (Raw natural pure honey - Beemaid Brand)
1 gram of Nutritional Yeast

I switch back and forth with the above PDYA recipy and the MEA.
And have always gotten great results.

Click here for all the agar recipies that are listed!~

If you need any help...please feel free to pm me.

good luck!~

tc

I grew these cubes from a wild print with no agar work but I never new what agar was when I attempted this. It was pretty much a waste of effort the fruits were so small
