Pan. cyanescens straight from cakes?
    #445540 - 11/03/01 09:50 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Has anyone tried to fruit Pan. cyanescens from straight, uncased cakes made from dung based substrate?
I don?t see a reason why it shouldn?t be possible, since Pan. cyanescens don?t require a casing, I?m just curious if anyone attempted to do it.

It's been done..
but why not go (optional agar)>grain>dung compost>thin caseing?

anoo....i did most of my pancyans and pantrops on past. cow or horsedung without casing....no problem....nobody cases them in nature, but the microclimate from surrounding grasses keeps the humidity high like a casing does...

Hehe, yeah, that?s why I prepared and inoculated a couple of cakes today. I just wanted to hear some success stories ;)

this isn't from any personal experience but i have seen people mention that the number of flushes were limited with Pan. Cyan. to however many you could squeeze out before contams set in.. wouldn't it make sense, then, to maximize the fruiting surface as much as possible with cakes to increase yield for the first few flushes? or would cakes not make much a difference in that respect.. ?

As I said I inoculated 6 glasses with sterilized substrate consisting of steeped grassed and dung, watered to a proper moisture.
I inoculated the substrate with liquid mycelium prepared according to the Mycelium Inoculation Technique.

As you can see, the jars are colonizing nicely with the typical wispy pan cyan mycelium.

Looks good so far. Don't you love that liquid mycel? you dont have to wait until the spores decide to germinate and grow big enough for you to see anything.
Hey Anno I have a question for you:
I got this stuff called "mushroom compost" its distributor is permagreen. I think your soupposed to use it as a fertilizer for grass. Heres a caption from whats on the bag:
"A blend of composts made from horse and poultry manures, weat straw, cotton seed hulls, forrest products and sphagnum peat. It's one of the basic formulas used by mushroom growers. What seperates us from the competition is that no mushrooms were grown in our product, so all the micro nutrients, trace elements and other conditioning agents are available to you plants. Nothing has been used up from the growing of the mushrooms."
sounds great so far, it goes on to say:
"Don't worry about funguses, high salts fron nitrogen residues, or other growths being in Permagreen Mushroom Compost Blend. Its clean!"
that makes me worry about fungiscide or somthing...but it says 100% organic on the front.
So my question is can i substitute this for the dung in your recipe? will it grow?...will it still fruit? opinions?...
coupla more ?'s
you meant steeped grass seed right? looks to be the case.
And I thought that your were an advocate of calling them Copelandias...I hope I spelled that right, but they are the same as pan cyans right?
thanks for your help, keep this thread updated man.

This mushroom compost from permagreen seems the right stuff from the description. If it says "it?s clean" than this is possible through pasteurisation, so I wouldn?t worry about anything being added to it. I?d try to use this in any case.
I use steeped rye grass seed in my formulation to make the substrate more airy, and at the same time provide nutrients to the fungus.
Copelandia cyanescens is synonymous with Panaeolus cyanescens, yes.

super...I'll give it a try, and let you know how it turns out.
What was your ratio of dung (i'll be using the compost) to grass seed? And thank you very much for clearing the Copelandia/Panaeolus thing up. One more thing, do you reccommend that the jars be shakable, or do you just "fill em up"?

i just started my first atemp at growing mushrooms. On sunday I inoculated 36 1/2 pint jars of ver/brf with ecuador spores. I believe I have evrything I need or my terrarium and the jars are colonizing right now. If all goes well about how many onces of dried mushrooms do u think I could get from this? would you recommend casing for a first time grower? how much of a difference would casing make? Also next time should I try ur Mycelium Inoculation Technique? I have never used grains before? thank you anno

To clear something up: this "cyan fruitin from the cake" is an experiment.
If I do cyans normaly, I use pint jars that are filled 2/3 and are shakeable. I inoculate those jars with rye grain spawn.

>What was your ratio of dung (i'll be using the compost) to grass seed?
I didn?t measure it out, I?d say 1/3 soaked grassed and 2/3 soaked dung by volume. But this is not so strict. What is important is the water content, I put in that much water, that I could squeeze some water out of it with my hand, bit the substrate shouldn?t feel muddy.

>One more thing, do you reccommend that the jars be
>shakable, or do you just "fill em up"?
As I already said, normaly I like tha jars to be shakeable, but this time not.

3-5g dry per cake= 108g to 180 g = 3.8 oz - 6.35 oz.
I?d case a few cakes so you get familiar with the procedure.
If you have a PC, try the MIT, it?s easy and it works.

Yes, the cakes colonized. I?ll give them another few days and then put into terrarium.

And yes, the glasses are of the 1/2 pint size.
