Bush lied?

A favorite cri de cour of the American left is "Bush lied and our soldiers died." This accusation over missing weapons of mass destruction is on bumper stickers, Web sites and the lips of angry Democrats. Lost to the memory hole is the fact that the prevailing wisdom among Democrats - right up until George W. Bush agreed with them - was that ... well, that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction. What they today call Bush's lie was in fact frequently cited by prominent Democrats before Bush was even elected.

If Bush lied, then so did all these people:

-"[Saddam Hussein] will use those weapons of mass destruction again, as he has 10 times since 1983." - National Security Adviser Sandy Berger to President Clinton, 1998

-"If Saddam rejects peace and we have to use force, our purpose is clear. We want to seriously diminish the threat posed by Iraq's weapons of mass destruction program." - President Bill Clinton, 1998

-"[W]e urge you, after consulting with Congress, and consistent with the U.S. Constitution and laws, to take necessary actions (including, if appropriate, air and missile strikes on suspect Iraqi sites) to respond effectively to the threat posed by Iraq's refusal to end its weapons of mass destruction programs." - Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., Tom Daschle, D-S.D., John Kerry, D-Mass., and others in a letter to President Bill Clinton, 1998

-"Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology ... " - Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., (now House minority leader), 1998

-"Hussein has ... chosen to spend his money on building weapons of mass destruction and palaces for his cronies." - Secretary of State Madeline Albright to President Clinton, 1999

-"Saddam Hussein is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He ... is building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them." - Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., 2002

-"We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction." - Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., 2002

So if Bill Clinton (or Ted Kennedy, or Sandy Berger, etc., etc.) is a liar, that means it's okay that GWB is a bigger liar? It's too bad more Americans have died and more debt has been incurred as a result of Bush's bullshitting. I guess if I lopped off four decades of maturity I could understand the 'logic' of this piece - the old two wrongs make a right defense of grade school nincompoops. It's too bad neocon apologists have less maturity than my 11 year old.

Blame eminent domain ruling on liberals

From: Nathan Dodell, Rockville

RE: "Eminent domain concerns mount," Aug. 9

It is of interest to note that Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said, "The president and his right-wing Supreme Court think it is 'OK' to have the government take your house if they feel like putting up a hotel where your home is."

Actually, the Supreme Court majority in the eminent domain case included the four liberals. The minority included the three conservatives. Dean got it backward, and thereby stirred up resentment against "the president and his right-wing Supreme Court" on false grounds.

There may be reasons for resentment, but the DNC chairman should not spread a spurious one.

Bush will go down as a great President. Clarity, strength, perseverence and determination. What a great man.

So did Lincoln and FDR. Doesn't mean they are.

It's funny that he took all this advice to get into Iraq, but he couldn't give two shits about the intelligence he got about Bin Laden when he came into office.

Governments always lie. If there's one thing you might find out about the Shroomery it's that most members don't fit the trivial "conservative and liberal" scheme here. Besides, all the presidents are indifferent and if they aren't they'll be assassinated.

You shouldn't get angry at Bush because Clinton agreed with him.

Now I understand.
Thanks for clearing that up.

What if you're in my position - not a member of the Democratic Party, nor a big fan of the Clinton administration's foreign policy. But I'm considered a "leftist." Am I allowed to call Bush a liar?

They should just go with a sculpted oil refinery next to Lincoln's face in commemoration of our three recent magnificent Republican presidents.
