Construction of a flowhood
    #4518257 -

Hi there,

Some months ago i bought a HEPA filer of 610x610x290mm. But the problem is witch fan should I use ?
Of course I searched the forums, it took me a few days to read all the flow hood topics ( a LOT of off topic replies in there  )
Anyhow, the only problem is all the calculations are with US measurements.

OK my plans:
I have painted some designs, but I want to use the one on the bottom. That way the flow hood would be a lot smaller.

This is my filter:

Of course you need some information about this beauty. As I said it is a 610x610x290mm HEPA filter. On top of it there is a little sticker witch gives the following info:
2385 m3/hour @ 250 Pa

I found the calculation's on www.fungifun.org/flowhood/ . But to be honest, I have no idea what they are talking about

So my question is, is there someone who can help me, or calculate how many m3 I need for this flow hood.

When I have all the materials I'll make a nice picture log.

Kind regards Jpilot

Someone gave me a site today, and I think I get it now.

Quote from http://www.orchideenvermehrung.at/english/lfh/choosing.htm
Quote:
Choosing the blower

When choosing the blower we have to make sure that it is able to transport the required quantity of air through the filter pad and the HEPA filter. We know the dimension of the HEPA filter and the required air speed in the working area (0,5 m/s) so we then can calculate the airflow per hour.

width of the HEPA filter:
0,305 m

height of the HEPA filter:
0,61 m

required air speed:
0,5 m/s

airflow = width * height * air speed =
= 0,305 m * 0,61 m * 0,5 m/s =
= 0,093025 m?/s

When we multiply this result by 3600 seconds (60 * 60) we get the airflow in m?/h.

airflow = 0,093025 m?/s * 3600 = 334,89 m?/h

On many English websites you?ll find the airflow in Cubic Foot per Minute (CFM) and not in cubic meters per hour (m?/h). One ft (foot) is 0.3048 m so one cubic foot is 0,0283 m? (0,3048 m * 0,3048 m * 0,3048 m).

1 m?/h = 0,5886 CFM

1 CFM = 1,6990 m?/h

In the next step we have to read from the diagram below how much pressure is necessary to transport 334,89 m?/h air through the HEPA Filter. An airflow of 334,89 m?/h is about 60% of the nominal airflow so the required pressure is 150 Pa.

So I guess it's like this:
0,61*0,61*0,5 = 0,18605 m3/second
0,18605 * 3600 = 669,78 m3/hour
witch is 396,23 CFM

So a 700 m3 blower would be fine for my hepa filter ?
Sounds right ?

Anno could work this out for you, down to the exact cfm. If he isn't so busy - he cannot get to it.

I had the same problem - when I built my first flowhood. How I resolved it was to go with a fan/motor combo that I knew was far more powerful than needed. I simply installed a variable speed electric motor control. So, I could adjust the cfm downward.

OFFON

A candle flame is a good tool to test if you have laminar flow.

My present pride & joy housing came from the factory - with a matched filter & fan

Well the problem is I don't have any clue how powerful the blower should be. I think I buy a second hand blower of 1000m3, when my calculations are right that should be way more then I need.
