When you start jacking off to flowhood pictures ...is that when you know your interest in mycology has gone too far?

Well is it??

On a serious note; how did you evenly distribute the fan output through the HEPA, or is the breeze stronger in the center than it is on the sides?

usually a bit stronger near the center and certainly the closer to the flowhood the better when working

I have a damper plate 10in's in front of the blower to defuse the air flow. So far I have not notice the flame changing . Not even 1in from the sides.

I need to remember to thank agar for his help in this.

KaptKid, when you say "damper plate," is that an actual name for a device or is that your term for something you rigged up? Can you describe it a bit, or possibly include an image?

Your project is gorgeous. I've been considering making one myself but even distribution of the fan output has me baffled (hahah, get it, baffled? ...oh well...).

Very simply. A plate the same size as the blower openning set 10 in's  in front of blower opening. The wind from the blower hits this and defuses.  If I turn the blower up all the way it will put the candle out.

I had a hip replacement 5 weeks are so ago. Have a limited # of time a day to go up and down my stairs. Will pm you tommow with dim's.

The laminar flow is caused by having a plenum under pressure between the fan and the filter. The pressure evens out in the plenum so an equal amount of pressure is on every square inch of the back side of the filter. That results in the even flow.

No need to post dimensions, KaptKid. Your answer covered it. Thanks!

A plenum, huh? Interesting. A simple plate will do that? I would have thought a simple wooden piece would cause eddies and currents in the airflow. Hmmm.

Thanks for the input, all.

I take that back.

Can anyone post a picture or a diagram of what a plenum looks like? I get the general idea but the "under pressure" part has me thrown. I've looked around on the net and I've found lots of references to plenums in relation to laminar flow hoods but nothing more.

There is equal pressure across the whole filter. It might be weaker aroud the sides because it isn't sealed completely so it looses some suction. The air does't need to be diffused.

A pleneum is simply an enclosed area under pressure. When you use a blower to pressurize a space, the pressure is equal over the entire space. For example, if you blow up a baloon, the pressure within the baloon is equal at all points.

For a flowhood to acheive laminar flow, the blower must pressurize a plenum that is located immediately between the blower and the filter. Due to the fact that air is a fluid, the pressure will be equal at all points within the plenum, or pressurized space. This means the pressure is equal over the entire back surface of the filter, resulting in even airflow(laminar) thru the filter to the front surface.

There is no area that is weaker than any other area. The edges flow just as well as the center, and there is no suction anywhere within a flowhood. It works on pressure. The air DOES need to be diffused if the output is blowing right on the filter. I recommend installing a blower so the airflow is not directed right onto the filter, but rather parallel to it. My blower is installed on top of the flowhood so the air blows vertically down into the plenum, rather than horizontally, directly at the filter.

Oh, I think I understand. The whole housing takes an L-shape with the fan sitting on the top of the L, facing down. The HEPA is situated at the bottom right of the L.

In this way the flow is evenly distributed throughout the entire surface of the filter?

Correct?
