more flowhood design questions...
    #11753626 -

I'm curious what people think about extending the sides and top/bottom from the front of the flowhood to form a small "work zone tunnel" of about 10-12 inches versus just leaving it wide open. My thoughts are that you will have a better work zone because of less turbulence through the short "tunnel" instead of the filtered airflow mixing immediately with the outside air. How much of a benefit is this do you guys think this really is? Is it worth it?

I'm making a 3ft x 2ft flowhood and I'm trying to make it as small as possible (so I can get it through the damn doorways!).

I also have a question on plenum size. What effects will there be using a plenum the same depth of the filter (mine is 6 inches) versus using one of 12 inches? or larger? I understand you want more space to pressurize the complete filter to achieve laminar flow but how much is enough and what are the advantages of having a larger one if any?

Anybody have any experience or opinions on the topic?

I really want to get started on this but I'm unsure which direction to go.

Don't do it unless you have a huge flowhood.  The problem is you need to turn jars upside down when doing g2g transfers, and if there's a top on your work area you won't have room to do it. There is no need for this anyway.  You're going to be working in the first few inches right in front of the filter anyway, thus any contaminants falling from above will be redirected away from your work.

I wouldn't call it huge but it's bigger than most pictures I see of peoples flowhoods around here.

With a 3ftx2ft filter there's is plenty of room todo g2g transfers with quart jars, gallon jars, and even spawn bags.

Why do you say "unless you have a huge flowhood"? Is there some advantage to having sides and tops on large flowhoods that I'm missing? To me, the bigger the flowhood the less important this would be because with a big flowhood you have work space on the edges all around the filter that never gets used so the outside air mixing is less important vs a small 1x2 where outside air would mix in with more of your work space air.

three sides might work unless you need the top for a shelf.

I know it will work. I was wondering about the theory, practicality, and worthiness of adding sides/top/bottom for a work space tunnel.
