Straw Advantage?
    #1291832 - 02/08/03 06:27 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

Okay, so i am aware that adding straw to your dung makes the dung go farther but are there other advantages? I've got enough dung to just use straight dung. I HATE chopping straw. I was gonna do a test where i did one with straw and one without and then thought better of it. I'd rather get input before I did this because I REALLY HATE chopping straw! That stuff gives me hives and drives my allergies nuts! I've been using straw/dung so I wasn't sure if straight dung would not perform as well (maybe straw adds a level of airiness or encourages rhizo?). Also, before somebody suggests i buy pre-chopped straw,... no, thank you. If there is an advantage i'll chop it myself, no sense paying for shipping, etc. If I was gonna pay I'd just pay somebody to chop the straw I have.

Bump...

edit: also, why isn't dung hardly covered in the FAQ? there's no dung TEKs, really the only mention is in bulk substrates/pasteurization... you'd think straw was completely necessary in a bulk tek...... is it?

Just buy a bunch and run over it with the lawn mower once or twice.

I know that sounds red neck as hell but if u keep the mower running slow it will work.
I did it with a whole bale and a bushhog on a tractor.

I've been toying with the idea of VLBTek but really the only question here was if there were any REAL advantages to adding straw to dung as that is pertinent to what I am doing NOW... any comments on the question I am asking Hippie?
