Pics of Salvia longispicata & S.leucantha x elegan
    #451629 - 11/08/01 11:47 AM (23 years, 1 month ago)

The first photos are of Salvia longispicata (blue chiquita). This is the first time I've grown this species.Hope it makes it through the winter.

This next one is Salvia leucantha x elegans. It's a hybrid cross.Apparently there was a little hanky-panky going on between a leucantha and a pineapple sage (elegans) and this was the result.(damn slut) ; )

As far as I know, none of these have any "active" compounds in them, but you never can tell : )
I thought ya'll would like seeing pics of other salvia species. It may help when trying to identify a salvia plant that some of you may run across in a nursery or in the wild.

The look great. Grew them from seed?

Thanks.
No,I didn't grow them from seed. All the salvias that I have were either bought as plants, or taken from root or plant cuttings.
The salvias that I have, grow as perennials in my area (central N.C.).The odd thing I find is that nearly all of my salvias originated in Mexico,Central America, and South America.I would think that the climate here(N.C.)would be to cold in the winter for them to survive and come back, but they do.I found that if you mulch them well, and don't cut the dead foliage back (salvias have hollow stems, and water will get down in the stem and freeze, killing the plant)they come back every year.I guess my point is that I'm wondering if I can grow Salvia divinorum as a perennial,if I give it the right care.

Hi,

I've been in the zone where Salvia divinorum grows naturally. And one thing is for sure, it never freezes there, but the temperature gets down to 5 or 6 C in the night and maybe 15 C to 20 C at day. Give it a try, maybe your climate is good enough...

Ooh, those are pretty plants. What exactly is Salvia used for? I'm this naive, sheltered, mormon boy who doesn't even know what LSD stands for.
