Yeah, scrape off the casing layer and let it fruit like that.

There is nothing wrong with hydrated lime. It's the only kind of lime I use, and have for years. It's awesome.

I too used the casing tek below without reading the warning.

http://www.shroomery.org/index/par/7977#5050plus

After adding the 1.2 cups of hydrated lime, I tested the water that I squeezed out of the mix and it was off the charts alkaline. I threw it out and started over. I would have to say you might want to scrape your casing material off and fruit that way or try a different mix although I don't know if you can recase as I am a complete newbe. This is what I mixed up a couple of hours ago and got a ph of between 7.6 and 8.0 with my test strips. I guess it is like a 66/33 mix:
1 bag or 8 quarts of peat.
16 cups or 4 quarts of verm.
5 tablespoons of hi-yeild hydrated lime.
I did not add a long term buffer as I have had a hard time finding stuff locally except for calcium carbonate gravel at the pet store but I was'nt sure that would work because the grit was so large.

Again this seemed to work for me, but I have read that the ph of peat varies regionally so you may have to adjust accordingly. Also this is the first time I am mixing up casing mix or even doing a casing for that matter so this is just my two cents. Hopefully it will help. Good luck in your future endeavors.

Yeah but do you use the amounts listed in the 50/50 tek provided by the link?
