MASSIVE COLONIZATION, 48 hrs :)
    #447682 - 11/05/01 02:27 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Well, A friend of mine " Dr. Cubenisis" ;0) Started his very first
batch of shrooms on friday * YIPPEE!!!*. Used the pf tek, but substituted
a recipe swiped from anno when it came time to mix up the ingedients.
Dr. Cubenisis trusts his opinions and trials better than the ancient pf tek, which is great, but sorely in need of some updating,.

When Dr. Cubenisis was done with all innoculations, he placed the box on top of a refrigerator which was blasting some heat up the back and slapped a thermometer on the box.

Checked the jars last night, 48 hours later, MASSIVE colonization.
I didn't know it could happen so Quickly! Lost three jars to the dreaded green mold. I know there is a sterility tek that explains common causes of green mold
so Dr. Cubenisis need to back track a bit :)

Also, decided to disinfect a bunch of assorted jars and fill them with
birdseed based on dethheads birdees tek. He innoculated that last night,
looking forward to seeing what happens. Dr. Cubenisis knows, experimenting
for newbies is dangerous... But WTF? Dr. Cubenisis has doubles, triples, quadruples of all supplies right now but JARS! And more of those are coming soon! with the birdseed tek Dr. Cubenisis went off base and made two holes, the first for innoculation, the second for hepa material. He used the little ends from the nail hole to close up the hepa material, taped the other side directly after innoculation. after all, whats 30 cents worth of birdseed and 10 cc's of spire juice? LOL! Prolly won't work, but if it does, Dr. Cubenisis will be using it to make his very first casings!!!! * grin *

Dr. Cubenisis has decided that the best way to go is UP UP UP!!!
ALL of his suppliers came thru, and he is sitting on no less than 15
syringes, ( three of them full of bought stuff, and three of them filled with Dr. Cubenisis very first attempts at transferring spores to a needle) and about 16 spore prints, some of them ( no names cept ralphster ;) almost as big as MY HAND!!! LOL! Gotta love it!

He is puchasing around 50 pint jars this week, and doing some MASSIVE testing,
experimenting, and FUN!!! Screw the small stuff. with a couple hundred dollars
spent he is on track to come home and experiment NIGHTLY!!!

Anyway, Just having fun!!

Peace out yo!

Wanna post this "special" recipe?
I also think I hate you, my dog's brother has had 5 jars in the incubator for 14 days and they're still at 60% of colonization.

Hmmm, Not really a " special " recipe :)

But Anno DID explain how and why the brf/vermiculite works :)

I don't have a hard copy, but basically he told me something I had yet to read among the dozens of teks I have studied.

He says that the idea behind mixing the two is to COAT the bfr over the rice flour. I didn't MEASURE the water. I mixed the vermiculite bowl with water until there was a SMALL puddle in the bowl, barely a trickle. just enough so it was obvious the vermiculite had soaked up what it could.

THEN, I used annos suggestion for ( I think ) 2/3 cup verm to 1/6 cup BRF.
Instead of whatever PF suggested. At that point I put the box on top of the fridge which is cool on top, but has heat coming up the back. placed a bowl of water next to it, and made a saran wrap curtain ( cabinets are above my fridge )
HE mentions that people might not realize how important this mixture is and
that it is something VERY important which may be overlooked and all.

Basically. THe idea is to COAT the verm with brf, no more, no less.
And all my jars coated perfectly. No extra water, brf sticks straight to
verm, and not glass.... The perfect mix.

48 hours later, like i said, MASSIVE colonization. Let me put it this way, in the three jars that already had green mold in them, contams were the size of a BB, and growing. And if the contams were that big 48 hours later, you can imagine the fungal growth :)

Anyway, Dr. Cubensis is stoked, and looking to start approx 4 more boxes this week, moving to pints this time :) Depends on his amount of free time,
gonna do some additional rye/grain teks when he has a chance :)

Long time no see Grenade! We still gonna git together in the 4x4 after some rain to search for shrooms or what?

* grin *

I recently have had some very good colinization results in 72 hours different from what I normally get. This time I did not mix all of the ingrediants together at the same time. I did the same thing newbie read about mixing the verm and water first thoroughly and then mixing in the BRF.. It seems very effective because this is the only thing I did different and I am at about 30-40% after only 72hours with no contams. Normally it takes atleast 5-7 days for me to get the same results.

Wahoo!!!

Thank you for the uplift Mr. Shrums! I have been reading all the newbie crap about not deviating from the teks, but the problem is. If you actually STUDY each tek, usually you can find something that can be done differently with each one.
JUst for my initial sterilizing and innoculation I worked between no less than THREE different teks posted to my fridge,
which was a nice place for them considering I really like using the oven sterilization teks. I mean, I will eventually make a glovebox... But, don't really need one at this point.

Anyway, thanks for the post :)

Take care!

Not to rain down on your happy time but are you sure that the massive colonization you are experiencing is not green mold mycelium waiting to turn green?

MASSIVE Colonization in 48 hrs is very rare and would lead me to believe taht you are experiencing something else.

Hopefully I am wrong on that but if I am not you are one lucky guy to get such good results on your first attempt.

Also one more thing I would suggest that you don't go crazy and start 50 jars until you at least get these jars finished colnoizing at the VERY LEAST. Probably it would be better for you to wait until you at least see pins off of this batch.

The reason why I say this is if you have at least one grow under your belt there is less chance of you screwing up because you know what to look for. You know what different stages look like of the cycle.

You would just end up increasing the possibilities of success infinitely.

Karen

    #447835 - 11/05/01 05:03 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Why Hello Karen!!!

It could easily be mold. I am not sure, having never done this before.
BUT, the colonization looks quite like it does in the pictures of various successful jars. Who knows!?! And, even if all my jars died,,, Well, I am so happy cause I am finally getting my damned feet wet! So maybe the mold is colonizing faster and stronger than the fungus... Hadn't thought of that...
And as an experienced girl ( Heh heh, he said, "experienced" :) )
Well, I will keep everyone posted as far as that goes :) Thanks Karen!
As far as going crazy.... Everything will be dated and have a separate log to go with it, I'm not worried. I will learn all about the life cycle of the mushroom, be it thru lotsa trial and error, or very little, most likely a lot!
In the meantime, I will keep this in mind "but if I am not you are one lucky guy to get such good results on your first attempt. " YAY! Think I like that line the best! And, Not so damn lucky. For over a month I have sat down for hours a day at a time studying teks. Geez, I have even been helping people who don't read so good who are more experienced than myself! My experience ( hands on ) being 0, zero, zilch!

Anyway Karen, I hope you are wrong, but you are the * snicker * " Experienced " girl here, and I am not... ER, not experienced and not a girl!
I will wait until midweek and see what happens. If it is indeed green mold, and my sterility procedures ( or the syringes ) are badly lacking... I will go to the back yard and kill myself... Grenade and XXXXMushroomXXXX or however you spell his damn name can split all my supplies, :0( I hope it doesn't come to that! So whats up Karen! I know you are a local! When are we getting together to swap stories and you can learn me on my wrongs! I thought we were supposed to do dinner or something??? Oh wait.. That was all in my head, you never agreed to anything.... :( Well then...... * sigh * I guess this is it for us... We got along so beautifully, I can't believe you just want to end us like this.... After all the good times we had... Remember, that day on the lake?
Or when we went to alberta canada and saw a yeti??? Hmmm, no, I don't suppose you do.... Guess our relationship was that unmemorable.....
I hope to hear from you soon!

Whoa! You are a moderator?
OH my, is this the very same karen I have had words with in the past???
The sd local??? Will you marry me?????????

Don't give me your answer now... I'm content to wait a year or three!

:0P

Sincerely
* laughing *
Nebie Shroomer!

I'm with Karen on this one. I have never seen spores do what your describing in 48 hours. And the green and gray molds can and do develop within 48 hours. If you had them in total darkness I would figure it's gray mold.

Dammit!

Between you and karen I am really worryin now....
I wonder what I could have done that would infect ALL of my jars though...
time to read some contam teks and see if I made a major boo boo somewhere.
and yep, total darkness for the entire time. :(

Well, Thank you shroomery for supplying me with an endless line of posts to
help me figure ot my mistakes... Cause, if experienced growers have never seen anything like that before.... I might be in trouble... :(

Could be gray mold... I will go back to that rat testing tek ( LOL! ) and maybe
force feed a few rats some cakes and see what happens.....

Just kidding.

But I will keep everyone updated on, my magnificent crop, or my unmitigated disaster. And as far as percentage of colonization as of last night, I would say between 10 and 15 percent, which I regarded as massive due to the short period that had elapsed. :(

From now on, when I get all happy... I will make sure everyone in the room slaps me directly in the face first! And, because of all the help and advice I have recieved in this thread.... Whenever I hear people talk shit about any of you,,, I'm leavin the room! :0)

I'm not totaly ruleing out the possibility that what you have could be the 'shroom spores starting. What vendor did you use? Ole Rychie Hawk can kick out some AWESOMELY DARK syringies which pretty much kick most other vendors in the ass. I mean, ya just cant compare a syringe from Rychie Hawk with the average PSYLOCYBE FANATIC'S (PF) syringe. (Hawk Eye's are very very much darker with a ton more spores in it).

So, perhaps you had one hell of a good record setting inoculation. Keep compareing the jars with pics here to be sure whats up. I really think that you have some gray mold there, but I could be wrong. (hey I fuck up!)

Ack! This particular batch came from Captain max...
But I think the problem was with my pressure cooker...
It doesn't have a top ( jiggly thing that hold in steam ) on it, but does hold pressure. I was really worried about
evaporation,,,,, So, went home on my luch hour, and checked the jars again... and yep... Looks like gray mold. Two more jars showing green contam, makes 5 so far.... And the groth is indeed gray, not white... :(

Ok, I jumped the gun.,,, My apologies and thanks to everyone for setting me straight! I'm not going to kill myself yet...
Target has a special on pressure cookers and I just need one that works properly,,, I spent HOURS making sure everything else was sterile, it has to be the damn cooker...
Thanks everyone who posted to this thread, I can't imagine a more helpful family than the shroomery :) Will keep everyone updated on my gray colonization :0P

Peace

NewbieShroomer

Lol.. I have yet to see mold in my jars...
By the way if you havent read my other posts
I did it in my unsterilized bathroom on the toilet by scraping the spores in with a butter knife
and I opened one of the jars because i thought there was no growth (turned out most the top was colonized but its just growing increadibly slowely)

yeah newbie I wanna go picking! lol.... my stupid area sucks..i went to all the parks after it rained and didnt find shit
went to a little area with horse stables nothing
the cow stables are to far..like half an hour or something and i dont think they are quality fields if you know what i mean
the next day the jar i opened had a brown fuzzy mold near the top side which i again whipped out the butter knife for.. i cut it out and it hasnt come back
Overall I did this experiment the most unsterile possible and have yet to get contamination in any of my 6 jars
did i mention i boiled them and didnt use a pc
and also that i only boiled them for 25 minutes
Lol !!!
But hey... for my next batch (which will be cambodians) i am getting syringes...a spore spreader ..setting up a glovebox thingy... and buying a pressure cooker for
Im getting serious about the next batch

Hey if you decide to kill yourself ill pm you my addy so you can send me the supplies =-) lol j/k

Thats ok, live and learn.

I'll send you another syringe and you can try again. If you can't find the jiggley thing, a shot glass will usually work well enough.

pm or email me.

Hehehe...whoa you sure do know how to go off on a tangent don't you?

Sorry to hear that I was right about the fast growth. If you have a digi-cam take some pictures and post them in the contam forum so that we can use them for a contamination guide.

Well one thing I can say that may make you feel a bit better. At least it didn't happen after waiting weeks and you started seeing pins and it smothered them so that nothing developed. That I am sure would be much worse. :)

Karen

To put on the steam outlet?? Or how did you mean that?

If you can?t find a pressure cooker(although strongly recomended!) boiling(steaming) the jars in a covered pot for 1 1/2 hours should also work fairly good with the PF-tek.

>works :) I don't have a hard copy, but basically he told me
>something I had yet to read among the dozens of teks I have

I dind?t "invent" this, the idea actually came from the Fast Food of the Gods method. Although the whole method didn?t work for me, the mixing part is great.
Here?s my writeup:

When preparing the substrate, do it this way:
Put the required amount of vermiculite in a bowl (NOT for each jar separately!). Use a spatula or spoon to mix in enough water to saturate the vermiculite to the field capacity, mix well. The field capacity is reached when a small puddle, barely visible, forms at the bottom of the bowl when you tilt it. Then add the appropriate amount of BRF and mix together.(This works best if you use 1/2 cup vermiculite and 1/6 cup BRF per 1/2 pint jar)
The idea is to coat the wet vermiculite particles with the dry powder as you stir the mix with the spatula. This sounds trivial but it makes all the difference.
