Edible mushrooms in Michigan
    #4469008 - 07/29/05 02:50 PM (12 years, 25 days ago)

What edibles should I look for in Michigan? Where should I look?

I think this site is missing an edible mushroom FAQ

Try checking out any of the books by Alexander H Smith, one of the foremost mycologists of the 20th century. He was from Michigan.

You're right, we don't have an edible mushroom FAQ. We'd need a bunch of them - there are a lot of edible mushrooms out there.

Happy mushrooming!

There are edibles to be found within the woods of Michigan. Be careful when first starting out. I would start by choosing a few easy to identify species with not many look-a-likes. With some stuff, as long as you follow the keys and features properly you can ID them with little difficulty.
After doing it for some years I became more bold and confident. Trying new species used to be some kind of adrenaline rush that would test the effectiveness of my actual id's. I've eaten tons of edible species (after I identified them) and managed to never get poisoned or sick. Finding edibles is one of the main things that keeps me interested in this hobby.
Note that some species can still make you ill if they aren't cooked properly. An friend of mine has experienced some stomach upset from eating some species raw. It's a good idea to start small with everything new to you. The possibility of being allergic is always there as well.
