Worst analogy ever. There are crimes against inane and arbitrary laws and crimes against humanity. Don't confuse the two.

I have yet to see a grow-op pic with the perpetrator's face in it.  And, as near as I can tell, that pic doesn't depict any criminal activity, just stupid activity.

You are very selective in what you read.

In addition to what you pointed out Harman, is accused by the U.S. Army of attaching wires to a prisoner's hands while he stood on a box with his head covered and threatening electrocution if he fell and striking several prisoners by jumping on them as they lay in a pile.

And because of this she is charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice with conspiracy, dereliction of duty, and Cruelty and maltreatment.

Her 6 month penalty isn't even 6 months, she is only going to be serving for 4.

You may see this as justice.

I don't.

At least she didn't smoke the reefer.... I mean, murder, rape, torture, sure... 4 months is reasonable for that... oh wait... doesn't reefer cause the above crimes?

Hmm.

you guys need to keep in mind that most of the bad pictures don't meet decency standards (in other words the government doesn't want them to be visible) and cannot be aired. Abu Ghraib had murders, all sorts of nasty things, the thumbs up by corpse picture is close to a year old and most people aren't aware that it exists, so in their minds the worst thing that happened is you know.... being laughed at while being forced to be naked.

Fact is, keep the bad stuff out of the media.... and atrocities disappear. I know there are people in the army that just want to torture and mutilate and be depraved.... it's anyones best guess as to what REALLY happens, but it's obviously worse than the media shows you.

What needs to be understood is that people do evil evil things in the justification of God, country, and military.... it doesn't matter whether that country is America or not... they are still going to happen. We owe it to the world to completely, totally, and fully prosecute as high up as the ranks go, even if they go all the way to the whitehouse (and Rumsfield approved these interrogation methods).... if we do any less it means we don't care, and that we shouldn't be in this war because we aren't fit to be saviors to the Iraqi people.

I am operating under the assumption that our armed forces are probably more civilized than most, though. But they are only as good as their weakest links, in this case, males aged 18-21 that like Godsmack and explosions, per their recruitment commercials.

I don't know what to do honestly..... the military is a mess, but it's anyones guess as to how mild or severe it is.... the bad things may have been isolated incidences, they may be running rampant, but I am just left with a sickening feeling that our country is completely hiding stuff from us, and it makes me want to jump to worse case scenarios.

It's sad that you can't trust the "freest nation in the world" the place that was started so nicely by our founding fathers..... someone will probably write a book one day about how it all fell apart while we sat by and did nothing.

Then answer why the murder pictures were never shown on television alongside the tame nudity pictures.
(if anyone does in fact have evidence that that picture was broadcast on mainstreamed media i'd be happy to retract that statement, i know the first time i saw it was not in the unfolding scandal, but shortly after Bush viewed the images, was displeased, and a decision was made not to show any more. It was then floated around the internet)

it has nothing to do with Bush, it has everything to do with our countries extreme insecurity which is masked by patriotism in the post 9-11 world, IMO. The media doesn't want to destroy national pride and cause civil unrest anymore than anyone else indebted to serving the country does.

Those that do are outranked and stifled by those that have money and security in mind.

Re: Abu Ghraib, new pictures old story...new reactions? [Re: zappaisgod]

My references to television were made to show that the common people don't give a damn.

No one that doesn't care is going to go out and look for obscure, hidden, and not well circulated abu ghraib pictures when they can see them in 15 seconds on the local news.

As for my speculation, yes, it's my speculation and I went to the trouble of explaining my frame of mind. If you don't agree then have at it.

Fact of the matter is pictures were suppresed and ignored (like the one posted in this thread) and there are news reports of far worse things happening that do not have video. There are also reports of videos of things like rape themselves, which I have not seen.

and fact of the matter is that Bush was presented with a ton of pictures and he did make the decision that some of them shouldn't be seen.

Hence, my speculative conclusions. Can you honestly say that it's impossible that not a single person was raped or otherwise murdered or severelly tortured by the US army in any of its detention centers? I believe it is highly likely given that I have interacted with the US ARMY mindset, and some of the people [i.e. soldiers] have even expressed to me that they WOULD kill, carve, mutilate, etc, not the terrorists, but even the "innocent".

Many others openly make jokes about that kind of thing.

If you want to refute any of this, then fine, but one liners don't further understanding. I'm of the mindset that if something is probable, it will eventually occur. If you give angry teenagers out for revenge the opportunity to kill with relative immunity...... and you train them to hate their enemies, and that killing is fine....

well.

They're the army for a reason, maybe they are necessary, but IMO they need to be held more accountable in the types of people they recruit.

and they damned well need to teach adherence to the Geneva Conventions..... some of those indicted said they'd never even heard of them, though of course it could be lies.

the bottom line is accountability for these actions needs to be taken, and change needs to be implemented.

I also believe more serious crimes are being covered up. And it's not because bush is in office or anything like that. It's not a republican or a democrat thing. There's just only a certain amount of abuse and scandal the military can take, especially during a war. If pictures surfaced of murders, rapes, and tortures, then it would seriously impair the armies image and effectiveness all over the world.

The media may be more liberal, that is also not the issue. The media isn't just on some insane mission to destroy Bush, that's retarded. News is entertainment, mostly for people who can't be bothered to read real news in a paper, that's my opinion anyways. So the news wants ratings, and people love gossip, it's human nature, and that's why they show us scandals and a list of murders and bullshit about missing wives day and night. it's just sensationalism peaking in a very nasty sort of way. I mean the only reason it might seem like they are constantly attacking bush is because he is a very secretive president and there are a few very legitimate questions out there about some of the things he's done involving very serious matters. Of course the media loves nothing better than a presidential scandal (think clinton) So if Bush is involved in one they will report it and dig around it it to see if it's true, as long as it's not to HARMFUL to the country. That's the key i think. If it was found out the army had a torture program and that bush ordered it do you honestly think the news would report it? i think not. The media can be manipulated by the government enough to where you might call it control. They would never show something so damning to our countries world image. It would impair our ability to launch pre-emptive strikes in the name of self-defense, it might screw up trade, and we would look like nazi germany when over half the (my guess) would say that they support the torture because it's in order to keep them safe....So i think Bush, or Rove, or whoever could suppress the real story in the name of national security, and once you bring up national security you can pretty mush do whatever you want.

What's the best way to take a potentially explosive story that calls into question everything America stands for and slide it under the rug? Well you could just show a couple pics that will make it all look like a silly joke and then plaster scott peterson all over the screen for 4 months, and eventually everyone will remember that us americans would never ever do anything really bad, cuz we're the good guys. Then the story drys up, the lowly scapegoats get a slap on the wrist, people go back to watching scott peterson (who they care more about for some reason) and the country and military sail on, for the most part untainted.

I think you're crazy if you don't realize there are members of the media who will do anything to discredit Bush. They will even go so far as to fabricate shit. If there is anything real here we would have seen it, no matter how bad for America it might be. After all, the free press is the most important thing, right? Just ask them and they'll tell you.

This is a valid point, but these people are low ranking journalists, etc... (IMO) the media as whole just cares about ratings and money. They'll turn on Bush, but not during a war, not during a time of crisis. The ones who legitimately hate him and want to turn on him just because they think he sucks seldom make it into cable news because being on TV just wouldn't be helpful to their ratings, especially in times of crisis, etc.

Election year = bush bashing. 9/11 = bush praising. No terrorism in America for a while? Time for presidential scandals to be brought to light. It's not about Bush to the agencies themselves, it's about money and ratings.

Well put Vex...

"The media may be more liberal, that is also not the issue. The media isn't just on some insane mission to destroy Bush, that's retarded. News is entertainment, mostly for people who can't be bothered to read real news in a paper, that's my opinion anyways."

I couldn't agree more. I walk around campus and FNC (or sometimes CNN) is on, and I'm to the point that I want to throw a brick into the TV. It's good you kids like to get news, but can you condense something as fucked up as the Rove name leak scandal into 30 seconds of commentary, or a blip at the bottom of the screen? WHy don't you read about it if you care? Because you don't care and you just tune into the TV to get your daily fix of "The world is ending, but America will be okay."

But the dangerous line here is that the government is passing and/or wants to pass legislation that gives them the discretion to keep news agencies from airing certain stories. Now this can sometimes make sense (like if they're about to prevent a terrorist attack, maybe the media shouldn't say "hey terrorists, they're on to you, blow up the bomb"), but other times if they are trying to cover for their own blunders or atrocities, it's downright wrong. And I fear we are crossing the line from "legitimate" (albeit complete exagerrated and dumbed down) journalism into propogandic journalism.

I mean, when a news anchor says "another victory for the war on drugs" when describing how a GOOD PERSON is going to spend years in jail because their neighbors ratted them out for MONEY..... you know hope is lost.

Then they show the neighbors "He was such a nice guy, friendly to everyone......... *pause* I can't believe he did this." LIKE IT'S WRONG to grow a plant and use it in your house? Like it's okay that he's going to jail, like the flashing lights of oppression descending upon him magically transform him from Joe Anyman, loving neighbor and good citizien, into Scumsucking PieceO'Shit?

That's not bias, that's not bad journalism, that's propoganda... and I'm sick of it... maybe I should chew them out.... and they were in fact a FOX station.. .it's so hard to tell these days whether I am just blindly hateful of FOX, or whether ALL of their stations deliberately focus way too much on crime under the guise of "keep your family safe."

It's like the white house punishing that bus line for using marijuana legalization ads. Corruption is rampant in the media and "free speech" is anything but.

I agree... but you have to realize an individual can only be so informed. We all make statements we regret... we all have opinions that have not been thoroughly scoured for truth for hours on end.....

I guess students are at the age where they are just starting to get involved with the "real world", at least some of them are trying, rather than the overwhelming trend around some campuses to just go ahead and go with whatever the TV trend is right now.

I guess some jump on the whole anti-Bush bandwagon without a lot of thought though... I haven't met that many.

The whole democrat vs republican college atompshere is abusrd though, if you support change can't you bother to research your OWN candidates and other methods of thought.

Just because everyone is a republican and you hate the political atmosphere doesn't mean you should register democrat, vote for Kerry, and idollize Michael Moore.
