Report: Rumsfeld policy allowed Abu Ghraib abuse
    #2685190 - 05/16/04 03:35 AM (12 years, 6 months ago)

http://www.cnn.com/2004/WORLD/meast/05/15/iraq.abuse.main/index.html

Quote:

NEW YORK (CNN) -- The Abu Ghraib prison scandal was not the result of a few misguided soldiers, but of a decision last year by Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld to expand a clandestine operation against al Qaeda to the treatment of prisoners in Iraq, according to a report in The New Yorker.

Rumsfeld's goal was to bring the success of the secret terrorism program to Iraq in an effort to "generate more intelligence about the growing insurgency," the magazine reports.

The rules governing the secret operation were "Grab whom you must. Do what you want," according to a former intelligence official whom Seymour M. Hersh quotes anonymously in "The Gray Zone."

I think it might take that. From Enron to exaggerated intelligence, this admin dodges scandals like Barry Sanders did linebackers.

notice the Wilson case has all but dissappeared
from the headlines...

still waiting for the SC's ruling on the energy
task force meetings...

goddamn, if this was a democratic administration,
they would have been impeached and executed
by now.

If this was a democratic administration, it probably wouldn't have happened. All the scandals that have happened seem doubtful to have happened if a democrat was in office. First there was Enron, and since republicans try to favor and help "big business" like Enron it didn't surprise me in the least bit. Then there was the "faulty intelligence," and the democrats were telling the dumbass conservatives to wait anyway, but the Bush administration for some reason had military blueballs. Now there's the prison scandal, because they decided to apply the same interrogation techniques to Iraqis same as they do to al-Qaida. First of all, we probably wouldn't even have had the war with Iraq if a democrat was in office, and I doubt this would've happened even if the war did

Fuck republicans. Everyone makes a big deal because Clinton got a little head, but hell, we all need a good loving, if this country wasn't so uptight and ruled by conservative Christians it wouldn't have mattered anyway, and I'd rather have a president who likes to get some sweet lovin' than a president who makes unjustified wars, backs corrupt businesses and humilates and tortures prisoners

THE GRAY ZONE
by SEYMOUR M. HERSH
How a secret Pentagon program came to Abu Ghraib.
Issue of 2004-05-24
Posted 2004-05-15
The roots of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal lie not in the criminal inclinations of a few Army reservists but in a decision, approved last year by Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, to expand a highly secret operation, which had been focussed on the hunt for Al Qaeda, to the interrogation of prisoners in Iraq. Rumsfeld?s decision embittered the American intelligence community, damaged the effectiveness of ?lite combat units, and hurt America?s prospects in the war on terror. continued...

Hersh is catching heat...

but I'm glad he brings this up...

it's these politically charged legal power plays
that will be the most dangerous legacy this
administration leaves behind.

Mr. Hersh has offered no evidence. I will await more info than he has given.
