Back with more questions (Casing?)

Hey guys, thanks for all your help with my last post. I think I've got a pretty good idea at how to set up my terrarium using perlite and a bubbler.
After a few more hours reading, I've found myself wondering about casing and it's effectiveness. This is my first time growing and am not understanding exactly what it is or how it works.
What I have read suggests:
You take the cakes and put them in a container with some new layer that provides moisture and nutrients and put that in your terrarium, which may not need as much humiditiy now.
Well, being that I'm trying to make my setup as low maintence as possible... or at least stand-alone for a couple days. Would it not be a good idea to case? Are there disadvantages to casing?
My basic question is: What is casing, and should I give it a try? I have read a lot of the casing teks, and understand their procedures, but I don't understand why I would want to do it...and how and when to incorporate that into my setup.
Thanks, I'm sure you guys can straighten me out.

Casing usually yields much better than cakes for one, plus your humidity level is more flexible, but if you use your head you can fruit both in the same terrarium. Why not give both a shot and see which you prefer?
BTW, the main function of the casing layer is to provide moisture. Nutrients provided by casings are pretty much negligible unless you are casing with something like worm castings or dung.

I thought it was easy to over-humidify a casing. Would a perlite terrarium be too much for it?

No, perlite should work, just make sure you fan at least 4 times a day. IMO too much humidity is better than too little. I could be wrong though...
