grain substrates

would a pressure cooker be necessary for using rye berries, millet, or the "alien" substrate? or could you just boil the jars? do you reccommend using simply grains and shaking or making cakes in the jars, with a dry vermiculite layer on top? oh and one more thing... my cat has a cake in a terrarium that's been in there about a week and it's very fluffy, but otherwise hasn't done anything, whereas one that seemed dry was put onto the perlite and sprouted quickly. should i move the fluffy one onto the perlite, or just wait it out? thanks in advance for all your help guys! :)

You must pressure cook rye or any other grain. Boiling just doesn't cut it. Shaking will get you colonisation quicker.

Definitely pressure cook your grain--rye is best, though wheat works almost as well. No need to add the layer of vermiculite to the top, since you should shake the jar when you're done. And don't bother with those small jars when using grain--go with quart jars. It's less work for you to do.

As far as the fluffy cake, it sounds like you're getting stroma, the type of mycelium which doesn't fruit well. Make sure your humidity is high enough and your cake is getting enough air exchange through fanning (unless you're using a bubbler or something like that.)
