This will my first time using grain as a substrate. I had picked up a huge bag of white wheat grain from a local feed store, it was 5$ for a 50 lb bag. I have tried different ways to prepare it. but i found that steeping it for 45 mins and then p/c it for 1 hour makes a nice shakable Quart jars. I have done many seachers but couldn't find much info. Has any body used wheat grain as a shakeable substrate? How dose it compare to other grains? would anyone recomend it as a good rye alternitive? any info will help. thank you.

same way as rye, 160ml rye to 140-150ml water, with a pinch of oyster shell, pressure cooked 30-40 min 15lbs. I remember they were a bit wet coming out. Should of used a little less water.

I am currently using wheat and to prepare i just dump the required amount in a large pot cover with water bring to a light boil for about ten minutes and let sit for about 20 minutes before draining then let the remaining heat in the grains dry them off by spreading them out on trays. I find it much the same to use as rye or barley and am using it now after i experienced a sever drop in barley quality from my regular supplier. If in doubt about moisture content just take a hundred grams of hydrated grain and dry in the oven then reweigh to figure out how much moisture there was in the hydrated grain. Of course jar up and pc for 90 minutes and all should be good.

I have found that whole wheat feed works just as well as rye and for 10$ per 50lbs its a good deal.
