i've seen a few posts mentioning good movies to watch while you're tripping and i have to recommend spirited away or princess mononoke to anybody, they're anime films by hayao miyazaki and upon watching i literally was "spirited away" its difficult to find some pics on the internet which do them justice but i had a go.......
both of them have some mind blowing moments

has anyone seen his film the cat returns? i dont know if its out on DVD yet but theres a trailer for it in the special features of the spirited away DVD and it looks pretty insane. its about a girl who saves a cats live so it takes her to the world of the cats, you might be able to see the trailer on the internet.

I dont think there is even one studio Ghibli movie I have ever not liked. on some of the DVD's, Naussica I know for sure, there is a 30 minute in depth look at the history of studio Ghibli, which is pretty entertaining.

I saw Howl's Moving Castle twice...once sober and once tripping, it was amazing.
However,in my opinion Nausicaa is the most beautiful Studio Ghibli film

Miyazaki has some great movies... They will take you on a "trip" even when you are sober.
The great minds from CLAMP also deliver some masterpieces... Try checking out my personal fav... Miyuki Chan in Wonderland, an anime spin on Alice in Wonderland... it rules!

did anybody else get the impression when watching spirited away that alot of the characters or events would have had more significance if you were japanese? such as the "lighting of the lamps" and the stealing of your name? i also think that yubaba is strikingly similar to the withces in zelda ocarina of time wich is a japanese video game. i know for sure that the forest spirits in princess mononoke exist in japanese mythology.

Yes, I do get the feeling with a lot of Anime that I am just missing a lot of the significance in the narrative, due to not being a part of the Japanese culture.
I even think that sometimes this causes the stories to make less sense to me. It is usually the themes that I will pick up on in Miyazaki, like "man in conflict with nature" or "war is evil" etcetera
