Are shrooms legal in Japan?

I read in this month's Head Magazine that while psilocybin and psilocin are forbidden substances in Japan, the mushrooms themselves are not illegal. Anybody have anything to add to this? Because I might be going to Japan for a year and if so, I will be in heaven!!!

been here 4 years
its legal to buy and possess the shrooms.
it is illegal to consume them...hahahhaha no shit.
they are available everywhere, i use a home delivery service, cash-on-delivery, within 24 hours of placing my order.
usually someone sets up a stall outside main train stations on friday saturday nights and openly sells them. but there are dozens (100s) of headshops thru-out japan.
in osaka, i saw a guy driving around in a big 4wd, with signs advertising shrooms, prices and his mobile phone number, pasted on the sides and back of the car.
you could flag him down like a taxi and score.
most shops import them from switzerland or amsterdam, recently ive seen some from south africa too. average cost is $10 per gram. cheaper for more. most japanese i know wont take more than 0.5g so its cheap for them. a cup of coffe in a cafe here is $6.
if you do a websearch focusing on mushrooms and japan you will find a lot of info.
i keep reading that the govt has banned them, but so far no enforcement has taken place and you still see ads in mags and newspapers. the japanese govt banned beer vending machines 3 years ago, i can count 9 between my apartment and the subway, none have been removed, more have been set up.
making a law and enforcing it are completely unrelated here.
btw - a decent amount of pot gets you 7 years.

mr crisper, thanks alot!
Where would you suggest that I go in Japan? I would like to go to a beautiful rural place with lots of tradition and culture, but not too far from a major city so that I could go party sometimes...thanks again :)

well, planet asia has a point, shibuya is just amazing 24/7.
but culture and close to the city and nature......
kamakura is about 40 minutes from central tokyo, loads of temples and pretty green.
or go for nara or kyoto, close to osaka
tripping on the mountain above nara watching the sun set over the temples is one of my best memories in japan. also peaking in the gardens of kyoto was rather lovely too.
also if you can handle the cold...hokkaido is so fkn beautiful and sapporo can go hard.
yes, you can get peyote here, but its 5g of dried buttons for $80, shrooms are cheaper.
a lot of garden centers sell pots of san pedro for about $30, enough for 3-4 doses. much better deal, and easy to grow.
