Hello! Good to meet you (in a virtual sense of course). Yes, I was recently accepted to the JET programme, and I have a suspicion that I will be posted in Shikoku, probably Ehime Prefecture. But who knows! I will be happy to go wherever they ship me; it beats getting a finance job in New York...
What sort of mushrooms do they typically sell there? Are they "real" shrooms, or just some regular culinary shrooms hopped up on acid..? What would you say the costs and variety are? Social scene (anyone to trip with?)? Any mescaline, datura, or other active ethnobotanics..?
God, there are so many questions I want to ask you about Japan. I went to Japan in 1997, but only for two weeks. Never did mushrooms at the time, but since have cultivated plenty of my own...
Incidentally, I suppose you must have liked Japan. Did you consider getting a job with a private organization?

Yeah, they're the real thing. Mostly psilocybes, but some copelandias as well. I've heard the ones that you order online can be quite cheap, but in the shops in Osaka they run about Y2000/1.5 grams of Psi. It's steep, but it's nice to be able to just go out and buy them. "The scene" I don't really know about. I don't know too many Japanese people that shroom. Most in fact know very little about them. They're pretty popular with the expat community, though. You should have no problem finding someone to trip with. As for the other drugs, you'll have to ask someone else...i just don't know enough.
I have thought about staying in Japan with another job, but after 3 years I just feel I'm ready to get home and give up my transient lifestyle. Have a blast when you're here, and feel free to PM or email me about anything.

Hey mjshroomer! Thanks for the note. You guys are great. I indeed got posted in Ehime Shikoku and I am having a blast. Tripped for the first time in Japan and it was great.

someone's gotta tell me what JET is... and how i can get in on it? i'm in college right now and i'm considering dropping next quarter and going on an Outward Bound trip around the carribean and up to newfoundland. however, i can't quite make up my mind and i'm gettin pressed for time. is this JET a type of travel program for students? i've never heard of it but it sounds interesting if you get to go to Japan... i went there a year ago and thought it was great. let me kno please
