i have heard that due to loophole in Japanese laws shrooms are available for purchase in Tokyo head shops. Can anyone confirm, recommend a shop, and/or provide any insights into proper wording, phrases to make sure the shopkeeper understands what you are interested in?

If you start speaking their native language without understanding it you're gonna get lost big time when they respond!! I'd stick to pictures, gesticulations and a raised voice, but then I'm English.

Try kinoko/kinoco.
