PMP with a coolmist, awesome idea?
    #4386959 - 07/09/05 04:07 PM (11 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys. My friend has recently been messing around with PF cakes because his rye casings have been less than satisfactory and he is tired of ordering syringes, so he figures at least with PF he can get the life cycle completed to get some spores...

Anyways my friend was looking at the PMP, and has been using a similar chamber for his casings. He has 2" of perlite with h202/water for humidification and a coolmist with two outputs for air exchange going into his 96 gal sterilite. What my friend is wondering is, would geolite/hydroton give enough humidification without the aquarium bubbler? My friend already has two coolmist humidifiers and feels as though they give a very superior rate of air exchange compared to an aquarium pump, plus then he doesn't have to go out and buy new stuff. Will hydroton/geolite be enough on its own or is the bubbling action essential to the funcion of the PMP?

It will probably be enough with the cool mist humidity..it doesnt just work by bubbling, but by creating more surface area within the water, better evaporation. Even just a jar with water sitting in it would keep the humidity pretty high, with the cool mist. I havnt done geolite without the bubbler to test but it would depend on your ambiant humidity, how well everything sealed ect ect anyway. Humidity is one of the smaller problems when it comes to mushies, especially with casings.

Of course stagnant water sitting in the bottom would make it dozens of times more likly to harbor contams..

yes it is.

you would have water just sitting in one place...

you want the water moving around inside a PMP.

I was thinking it might be similar to perlite. Because with perlite you don't need any bubbler to make it work... looks like my friend will have to take a trip to the aquarium store when his cakes are ready to birth though.

my PMP has nothing in it but the cakes for humidity i use a tropicaire keeps the humidity around 95% pulse with no rocks or perlite its easy to clean just wipe it out with a hot wet rag and some alcohol
