No more hydroton

My friend has been growing for a few years before bothering to find info online about shroom cultivation. He uses a method very similar to the PF Tek....but slightly modified. Anywho.....i was reading post after post about something called hydroton (i thinks thats what it was)....MY friend also uses this in his fruiting chamber and casings for moisture. He grabbed the idea from a hydroponics book. But the best thing about hydroton is that he didn't know it was produced...he just thought it was a old hydroponics trick. He just goes to the local thrift store and chips up some ceramic plates..... you can sterilize them in big old pickle jars or anyway you wish and you don't have to hand out wads of money for 'hydroton'. Hope this helps. Peace

hydroton is expanded clay pellets
those "plates" u speak of are clay
usually pots are made of clay..
they are reddish....

Sorry about that....hydroton is a trademark name. I was talking about something diffrent....(the website I was looking had ceramic...not clay pebbles marked as hydroton). Which made me think what I had was also a poor mans hydroton. Nonetheless, cermic chips do hold moisture the same way hydroton does..just not as well i assume...but from some of the posts I read, that might not be a bad thing.

I never said anyting about clay pots....I mentioned a few times...CERAMIC plates....there are ceramic chips that are sold comercialy....and I just happened to run across a site comparing them to hydroton. I confused the comercial chips FOR hydroton. No clay, no redish pots...I am talking ceramic cups and plates...dinnerware. I now understand its not the same thing.....but the ceramic does hold moisture.
