I am currently trying perlite for my substrate. I inoculated 9 days ago in 6 jars. 3 are about 70% colonized, whereas the other 3 are look like they have no colonization, but are growing from the inside out. What I have noticed so far is that it grows between the perlite and then grows on the outside. One peculiarity I have noticed is that the mycelium and te water in the jar turn the perlite a kind of brownish color, but I dont think its conam. So far so good. Also, the perlite tends to make the substrate a little too wet. the mycelium tends to grow better in slightly dryer perlite. I used a 1/4 cup water for a 1/2 pint jar and then just loosed the lid for a day or so until the mycelium started flourishing. Good luck to you and keep everyone posted on your progress.

yes i noticed the same exact thing i used the same mix as you did then i split in half because im useing smaller jars of course and mine has the brown like you said that is a load off my mind i was wondering about that too so it must be normal i did 12 jars and only one did nothing but i might have forgot to do it i was rolling when i did it so who the hell knows but at least we are getting the same effects

Yeah, today was a happy day, the mycelium grew out from between the perlite and started colonizing up the sides with its little rhizomorphs. I think my 3 jars will be fully colonized in about 2 or 3 days. then the real test will be to see if they fruit!! I'm going to try the neglect tek with these to see how well it works *fingers crossed*

I don't use any perlite in my chamber. The cakes sit on screens 3 inches above a repilte heating blanket with a shallow tray of water on it----hydrates the chamber real well

Looking up

Since your cakes are smaller than mine, yours will probably be completely colonized and fruiting before mine. Let me know how they do so I can know what to expect. Mine are coming along nicely, but none of them are at the same level of colonization. One is almost done, while others are only at 5%(visible- i think theyre starting inside and going out) Let me know how it goes. If it works, we may have a new tek on our hands.
