I found these growing along a trail in a conifer forest. Neither seemed to be associated with any particular tree, and both had caps of about 3cm in diameter. Both were 5 cm or so tall. Classic LBM that can't be identified by photos in a guidebook alone.
The first had a cap like this...

a print like this...

and a stalk like this. I apologize for the crappy pic.


The next one had a wrinkly cap.

Hollow stipe with gills like this...

A rusty brown print.

And finally a photo of an immature specimen.

Anyway, your ids are appreciated--the LBMs are a bitch. Any outstanding characteristics that place them in any one genus?

A high percentage of Inocybes have a strong odor. Those odors are important for identification.

Genera they are likely to be confused with include Cortinarius and Hebeloma. Hebelomas usually have an odor similar to radishes, and Cortinarius usually have a cortina when young and are generally more colorful than Inocybes.

Accurate identification of Inocybes is difficult, and requires a microscope for most of them. You need to know the appearance of the spores and various cystidia for an accurate ID.

You're correct about the LBMs being a bitch to ID. More than other mushrooms, they're even hard to get to genus.
